Resolution auto change

Hello,

I've googled this to death and cannot find any simple answers. Back when I used RaspBMC i'm sure my television resolution would change to fit that of the source being played. For example a 720 file would play at 720 and switch to 1080 if i change to a 1080 file. I use plex on ras pi b+ and the resolution of the television is always 1080p even if I am watching a 720 or even 480dvd. Am I doing something wrong or is it not possible to change the screen resolution to fit the source being played automatically. Apologies if this has already been answered or I am being a noob and not seeing the wood for the trees

You probably have Preferences, System, Advanced, Resolution set to 1920x1080, which is why the resolution is always 1080p. Rest assured that your media will always play at the resolution of the file. This is normal behaviour, although the core of Plex HT is based on XBMC Frodo it is not the same, so much has changed in the last couple of years.

Regards

I have been looking and looking for this feature myself and on my system it stays locked in 1080P I would rather use my scaler in my theater, but it is always at 1080P no matter what I play.

Not sure what you mean, the resolution setting only affects the presentation of the screens with Rasplex, media will always play in the resolution of the file - 1080 (provided that your TV supports up to 1080p), 720, 480 etc.

Hi NedtheNerd,

Thanks for taking the time to look at my query and sorry for such a late reply, my mum borrowed my pi and watched all of breaking bad on it.

Ive attached a couple of pictures to highlight my problem because its still not changing the resolution to match the file. Apologies for the low quality they were taken on my camera phone.

As you can see the film is a 1080p source but the tv info is telling me its still playing at 720. Ive tried other tvs in my house and its the same problem.

Shall I go for a reinstall?

**I'm starting to think this is a tv issue and not a plex issue. The resolution changes automatically on my mac but if i connect the mac to the tv the resolution does not change. They are both Sony Bravias.

Thanks for all the help anyway, any reason to buy a new 50 inch will do me

mamcorcoran,

The setting you want is under Preferences, Advanced Video.  Change "Adjust display refresh rate to match video" to Always.  You may also want to set the refresh rate pause to .3 or .4 seconds if your TV blinks a bit while doing that.

This will output the video at the native resolution without scaling, so your TV (or external scaler) does it instead.  Almost anything is a better scaler than the Raspberry Pi.

Hi robertsig, thanks for the reply. I already had that set to on/off with a gap of 1 second. I changed it to always and still same problem. Whatever i set as my screen resolution for the gui in the settings it stays at irregardless of the source resolution. Im going to try a reinstall and also see how raspbmc functions and go from there. Thanks for the help

You know, I could have sworn it was working, but now that I'm testing 480i, 720p and 1080i files, I see it is outputting only 1080p.  Sounds like a bug.

Can any of the devs or other people "in the know" confirm that Rasplex is capable of this or not?  My other streaming devices I own have no problem outputting 720p if its a 720p movie, or 480i, etc.  Seems Rasplex (or the Raspberry Pi?) is stuck on doing the scaling within itself to 1080p.

If you still feel that this is a bug (although it isn't) and you're so hung up on believing what your TV is telling you then I suggest that you follow the advice in the 'pinned' item at the top of the forum https://forums.plex.tv/topic/89379-readme-getting-help-and-reporting-issues-with-rasplex/?p=518881

It may or may not be a bug.  It may be Rasplex isn't capable of it.  I'll ask them.

The scaling is obviously happening within the Raspberry/Rasplex and I'd prefer to have my $2000 TV do that function instead of a $35 computer.  It's not outputting a bit perfect video stream.  This is the same reason why people buy a $500 Oppo Blu-ray player instead of a $50 Walmart special.  It's in the scaling.

...and you're so hung up on believing what your TV is telling you...

You're funny.  Of course I believe it.  Why would it lie?

Edit:  Looks like a problem with XBMC/Kodi in general.  That's not good.
