Resolution marked as 720p even though it should be 1080p

I have an issue with a movie that is being reported as 720p even though it is 1080P

I know this has been up a few times and I keep seeing the same answer: It is because the resolution is calculated by the vertical pixel count of the file and not the horizontal pixel count.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to select it by width and not height?

I can already hear somebody asking why, since e.g: 1920x696 isn’t “True” 1080p

And the answer is that 1920x696 IS true 1080p. The black bars will be added by the player and be displayed as 1920x1080. All movies in the 2,35 Aspect ratio (1920xSomething) will always be 1080p even though the actual vertical pixel count of the file is lower than 1080 pixels.

By using the horizontal resolution you get non consitent result as the one I get.

Furthermore it makes no sense to waste bandwidth encoding the black bars to make it “True” 1080p. The clear cut line between the black bars and the actual image will cost a lot of bandwidth, which matters if you are going for a reasonable file size contra quality.

Just my two cents

Are there any way to change the tag manually?

Same issue here. I have a couple dozen widescreen 1080p movies that are 1920 pixels wide by something less than 1080 high that are identified as 720p. Would love it if this could be fixed.

But the answer can’t be a system that measures the pixels only by one of the axes. If a movie is EITHER 1920 wide or 1080 high it should be marked as 1080p.

Ihave plenty of movies that are 1080p high by some thing less than 1920 wide that are true 1080p movies but Plex identifies as something less. These are usually classic movies with a 4x3 aspect ratio that if stretched to 1920 would look ridiculous.

Suprised this is still an issue for such a mature platform.

This is getting a +1 from me.
It is simply a calculation shortcoming of Plex.
And I’d be happy to see an updated calculation algorithm.
