Resolution Tagging - Recently Watched or Continue Watching

Tried to do a search, but not really seeing something that relates per se.

I have begun my 4k collection as of a few months ago as I am sure that many people have. One of the challenges that I face locally is that it honestly sucks when I have content in 1080p or 720p in my general Movies library and then have the same content in my 4k library. I keep them separate so that it makes life much less painful dealing with remote family and friends that due to device or bandwidth limitations cannot use the 4k content without transcoding. So a great example is Aquaman. I have a 1080p copy and a 2160p copy. If my wife starts watching it on one of our ShieldTVs this evening and then stops an hour in of course it will show up in the Continue Watching category however it will show twice; as 1080p and then 2160p. If she wants to pick up watching again later she can’t just pick which entry to watch unless she drills into the detailed listing for the content to confirm that she is choosing the 4k version. It would be GREAT if there was a way to “color” or visually tag content and unless I am missing something there isn’t a way to do so? We all know that there are the standards for resolution for the most part; 480p, 720p, 1080p, 2160p. Something as simple as a way to apply a badge that codes to the resolution of the content from the metadata or perhaps a thin color coded border or even a color coded wedge similar to the one used for “Not Played vs Played” would be great. It could be placed on the upper left side of the thumbnail.

I have seen something like this enabled in a couple game emulation frontends plus there is already the Not Played tagging being down so wouldn’t think it would be too large of a leap to code in hopefully. I also don’t think that I would be the only person in the community that would find this of value. Love the product and the continued efforts to support more features.

I would reckomend you to read this page.

My personal setup is when i get a 4K movie it replaces the old one (1080). I have just put a bandwith cap when my server is accesses from the internet, so it will transcode it to 1080 or 720 try and read here

Hope it helps a bit

Appreciate the info, but personally don’t care for that stacking process. I have various reasons to want to keep my libraries the way they are. One of the reasons why I pay for plexpass is for the flexibility it should give people and honestly adding in resolution tags should be a simple coding situation and it would be a nice feature imho.

like this ? Indicate media quality on media poster

regarding the double appearance on the continue watching, you (supposedly) can work around that by using a different metadata provider for the 4k library, or doing a ‘fix match’ to separate the movie metadata.

or something like that.

might also have to do the ‘plex dance’

As a simple fix for now, why not just add 4K to the movie title (yes, you’ll have to manually update all current 4K entries, but going forward should be fairly quick)?

I don’t know if this will be helpful as I don’t generally have movies in the continue watching section (I tend to finish the movie completely, so I’ve never had this appear). As long as you’d be able to see the whole title (for movies with titles longer than what can be displayed, and I think the title might scroll, but not certain) this should allow selecting the correct one.

Just a possible workaround.
