Display Video Quality on Cover Art

Requesting to display the video quality on the cover art for movies.
My movie collection is a mix of DVD and BluRay. It would be nice to get a quick glimpse of the quality as I scroll through my movies.
I had separate library’s for HD and SD, but that just complicated things for me. Now both are mixed into One library.
Would it be possible to put a small banner across the cover art to show the video quality?
SD/HD/UHD/etc… or 480/720/1080/1440/etc…

Emby has this. Wish plex did also.

People who use this will know what i am talking about:
A movie detected by Plex can show resolution of 720p, but Radarr named it ‘[Telesynch]’ for a reason. Would be nice if in that case it would show ‘TS’ as resolution logo
I would like to see just the following resoluteness displayed:
TS
SD
720p (or HD)
1080p (Or HD+)
4K
8K (in the future)

Up to two different resolutions could be listed under each other with highest on top, more than two resolutions could be just the logo of a film frame with the number of resolutions inside

Bump… Please please please add this! Just a very small overlay in the upper right corner would be fine… “4K”, “1080p”, “720p”, “480p”. If there are more than one version, just display the highest resolution one as the overlay on the cover. thanks!

Would love that too.

Bonjour,

If this is implemented, it should be made more general to allow all kinds of selectable artwork overlays to also include movie rating, collection, labels. In fact, any way to view what collections a movie belongs to would be nice, as that information doesn’t even show on the title’s details page.

you could try this.

Interesting- Something like is possible, but there’s no integration presently.

It also seems a little wasteful to create a new cover for each item vs an overlay (as well as updating any ratings should you choose), but it’s a nice start.

Plex Meta Manager FTW btw:

Plex needs basically this! a kind of drag and drop frontend overlaying system for posters, all the metadata needed i already in plex DB, PMM takes a long time with large libs. we would save that time/power if plex would provide a frontend or setting for that!

I voted for this. I thought I should add my description to the problem and solution…

The problem is in a lot of the sorts and lists on Plex, if you have a 1080 P and a 4K version and even an imax version of a movie, it’s hard to tell them apart, and it takes a lot of clicking to figure out which one is which.

With this feature, you could easily and immediately distinguish them by using these overlays, or, as they are, sometimes called, “badges”.

Lol! You were probably unaware this is possibly my favorite movie of all time.

I fully support the proposal. Customizable poster overlays would be a big help.
Resolution, ratings, genre, collections?

I definitely want this feature added.
Right now it is impossible to see what “features” a video has a glance.

  1. what is the resolution? 4K
  2. Is there a commentary track?
  3. Is this an extended cut of a title
  4. Are there bonus features attached to the title

Sure I can find that information but it is not easy to see and my wife is not going to search all around to see if something is available.

Being able to see that information with overlays on the title would make it so easy to quickly see key details.

I also want to differentiate between HDR10 and Dolby Vision

Additional overlays or badges to Posters that would be helpful are 3D, On Disc (as in I own the disc) and streaming (with badges for services like Vudu, Movies Anywhere, Prime, Apple TV etc). I have a varied collection from SD, HD,4K, 3D and streaming only licensed titles and currently create my own Posters with badges using GIMP, but it is tie consuming as I have to download the posters first, then apply the badge layers for whatever I want to show. I know about PMM but don’t really want to have to go outside Plex for these features. Here’s a pic of how my posters look with 3 of these badges.

So as i started adding 4k content to my library recently, i found that it would be really nice to see at first glance, which one of all the library/homescreen items i see actually is 4k…so I would like to see an option that puts a “4K” icon on the library thumbnails

There’s actually already an existing feature suggestion discussing an option to display the video quality / resolution as an overlay on the poster. I’ll therefore close this thread as a duplicate and would like to encourage everybody who voted to transfer their vote to that other thread. My apologies for the inconvenience.
