Roku 3 Unnecessary Transcoding

Seems my MKVs are all getting transcoded to my Roku 3 devices, regardless of the settings I choose, unless I use force direct play. This is happening for little cartoon videos less than 2mbit all they way up to 19 mbit movies…

Selecting Force does work for video. There are no problems there.

One of them (Roku 3) is hooked up straight to a cheap TV and can’t play DTS streams, so, I cannot force direct play on this one, because half the movies have no audio if I do that. They play just fine in the other room with the AVR.

So, what to look for? I want to force the video stream to not be transcoded, and leave the audio set to auto. I don’t see a way to do this.

I don’t think I should have to play with these settings at all. The video plays fine when I force the direct play, but Plex wants to transcode it if I don’t. So my server sits there grinding away transcoding a Paw Patrol DVD rip. My kids may not notice the loss of quality but I know it’s there. Plus if I sit down to watch a real movie I cannot abide re-encoded video for no reason.

Where do I start looking to see what needs to be changed?

I should add that I set the local quality to Original with no change. These are on a local network (of course).

I think I have determined the cause of this by looking through the logs. Apparently some of the video files (all of the ones I was testing!) have a reference frame count that is too high for the Roku – though they play just fine on the Roku!

One log entry says:

video.refFrames limitation applies: 13 > 8

Okay, so why does it work with direct play?
