Roku 4K playback pixilation issues

I am having some issues with RoKu and Plex on a 4k HDR oled TV whilst streaming from my NAS. I have spoken to Roku support at length and they point me in the direction of Plex after much testing. In short I get a very colorful pixilation ( See images) and freeze frame when playing 4k in original compression, but audio still keeps playing, with the above set up.

The solution so far is to jump 10 seconds forward into the movie and all works perfictley for less than 2 minutes then it happens again and repeats this cycle. Any ideas of what to do or who to speak to?

Tested, alternative HDMI ports on TV, tested watching alternative file sizes from 1080p to 720p and even SD all work fine it only seems to happen on HDR 2160p larger files with the quality set to Original to avoid transcoding which will take place on my NAS DS218+

Any advise would be great.

Keep an eye out for an upcoming v5.1.5 release which will likely fix this issue.

Thanks, is this an update for the Roku plex app? What is the rough release date of this new V5.15 please… Many thanks

Correct, this is for the Roku Plex app. The update should be live in the next couple of days.

Awsome I will install and let you know how this works out…

Hi, I haven’t seen the updated app just yet do you have a revised date for release ?

Hi Ruuk,

Pleas see images attached. Sadly it seems to have made things worse. I play the media in Original quality as it will transcode otherwise. Please advise?

It appears the issue we fixed in that release was different from yours. Could you possibly create a sample of the video ad DM it to me? Here is a guide on how to do that if you need it:

Thanks

@Clivesmithuk: Posting some of our DM here for others who may read this thread.

None of the Roku developers can duplicate this with your sample, with other users samples or other samples we tried, but also none of use happens to have a HDR capable TV. Our current thought is that this is an issue with HDR TVs specifically.
I’m pretty sure we fixed your original issue with the update, but that just allowed this new issue to be realized. We’re getting someone to do some testing on an HDR TV so we can confirm that is the issue and then we’ll go from there.

If you’d like, you could go into your Roku’s display settings and change it to one of the non HDR settings and see if you can get it to play with one of those - maybe try a 4K one first and if that doesn’t work try 1080p. If you try this, let me know the results.

Hi, I think the issue is not replicating for you due to the file not been split correctly. Is there another programme I can use to split the file and send you a exact small part copy ?

While this is possible, we had some other users with the same issue that were able to duplicate the issue using the sample they sent us and we couldn’t duplicate with those samples either.

I cant change the ruku settings from original or the file will have to transcode and my Nas hasn’t got the processing power to do that. DS218+ sinology.

Sorry, I mean Roku display settings, vs Plex app settings.

If you’re referring to this:

Hi i have been having issues with my NAS so have not been able to check this yet. Have you made any developments your end yet?

We’ve filed an issue with Roku and are waiting on a response from them. We haven’t been able to duplicate the issue yet, so it seems like an issue specific to certain TVs or setups.

You might want to check out this page: support.roku.com/article/235168467-how-to-set-up-your-roku-streaming-player-for-4k-hdr

The issue might not be related to anything on that page, but it would be good to make sure all the requirements are met so we can rule that out as a cause.

Hi, Eventually got my nas back up and working. Right RUKU display settings test: tested 4k 30 hrz h 2.2 4k hdr content the dark night works fine but looks not so colourful to be expected. tried 60 hrz would not let me select it. ironically i then tested the same media file with RUKU s=display settings set to 4k hdr as we get our every colour in the world on display at the same time screen. so a fail. Now this is interesting the tv does say hdr turned on and then hdr turned off when the display is enabled for hdr and the media starts to play and stops as you would think, however since testing non hdr setting then hdr 30 hrz setting i now try and watch a normal 5 gig non 4k file 1080p and i get the same multi coloured screen were i was not getting this before testing. I was playing in the RUKU settings and came across / advanced display settings / Auto-adjust display refresh rate which is disabled, not sure if this will help or not ? There is also a HDR subsampling setting but seems to be for 60hrz setting confgs. I restarted the RUKE still displaying 4k non hdr to see if i could now watch my media 1080p file as per normal and it played back video as normal I then changed the display settings in RUKU to its auto detect 4k hdr 30hrz restarted and… it played my 1080p file perfectly. I hope this helps with your next update to fix this chaps

Update i have an LG tv i followed the steps in this article: https://support.roku.com/article/235168467-how-to-set-up-your-roku-streaming-player-for-4k-hdr // LG HDR TVs: Home > HDMI > Settings > Advanced > Picture > HDMI ULTRA DEEP COLOR > On > Restart And all is working fine its changed my display to 60hrz on the RUKU and i had to change 3 x hdmi options on my LG tv to on for the deep colour to be activated. The dark night 4k hdr dts 5.1 works amazingly well and so does my 1080p files. seems to be the solution. I will carry on testing to see were i get but please pass on to others.

I’m getting the same thing. I have a samsung tv. I’ll have to see if i have the same settings.

Mine is a straight rip from mkv. Looks like I’m going to have to reencode it with different audio so it doesn’t transcode. Right?

roadzy I messed around with handbreak and even rented a MIcrosoft Azure VPC 16 cors to transcode files the issue is you will always transcode to 8bit and not 10 bit so you loose the HDR. also remember to do direct treams on the audio if DTS or equivalent or it will just be converted to ACC3 . Turning on the funtion on the HDMIports fixed the issue and RUKU is not transmitting at 60 hrz HDR 4k… all gravey… the tv,s plex app just doesnt have the power to deal with 4k the result is transcoding been activated then your NAS or PC equivalent just wont be able to cope unless you specifficley get a chip designed for no buffer transcoding about £180 looked in to this as well. Or a codi box seems to fix it… I like the RUKU fix though means i can take it with me
