Ran into another crash. There was actually one before the report, a total of 3 today.
Fourth crash here, pretty easy to reproduce. This is on a new Roku player too purchased earlier this year. Basic MP4 playback, not live stream or anything complicated.
Fifth crash on another Roku unit. On a roll today.
Ran into this again yesterday, report inbound
Reported a few more, one from today that occurred during Live TV. These crashes happen with quite some regularity. It’s surprising it is happening on RTM software.
Thanks for the reports. We have a response from Roku now. The crashes all appear to be memory usage related with the Plex app getting killed when memory runs very low on the device. There has already been some work on reducing the memory usage and this will need to be looked into further.
Of your devices that had the crashes, the Roku Express is the roku device with the least amount of RAM so you may get more crashes on it
Thank you for your reply @sa2000 and your investigation. I have to say that this is surprising as this was the cause of the first report as well.
How is the simple playback of mp4 files on a streaming device causing such extreme memory consumption? It seems like such a fundamental feature for what the streaming device is built for that this should never happen. This is like a car tire going flat after exposure to the tarmac for a few minutes.
I can tell you that we have also been using YouTube to watch many hours of live-streaming NFL Sunday Ticket on all three of our Rokus and it has never crashed on any of them.
I hope you can understand the concern/surprise here.
Hi @sa2000 are we sure all of these reports are due to memory issues? I am getting crashes that occur after only 10-15 minutes of use, on my Streaming 4k stick which was purchased just a few months ago. This seems like a much bigger issue than memory utilization, I hope you can understand the concern.
This device has double the memory the Roku Express has. There were crashes on this before. I have made the development team aware that these crashes are still happening.
Thank you for that, it is appreciated. I can understand running out of memory after hours of playback … but only after 10 minutes seems like something completely different and/or a critical bug, especially on newer devices with so much memory.
@Mike-E The development team are continuing to work on memory usage investigations
Could you tell me if you have a large number of pinned sources on the app and if reducing the number of pinned sources makes a difference
Thank you for the suggestion @sa2000 , it is appreciated. There are about 20 pins but 5 of those are built-in, so roughly 15 custom pins. Is that considered large? We do use them so it would be an inconvenience to unpin them. How many should be a safe range to check to be sure?
I do not know but I understand that it has a bearing on memory usage
One suggestion from me is to try for a period of time to just have one or two pinned sources and to use the More
button to open the others when you need them - just to see if it makes a difference - and to concentrate only for these tests on the 1Gb ram device - ie not the 512Mb Roku Express
It’s a bit of a chore to get those pinned/unpinned, but will see what I can do. Additionally, I am not sure if this is the cause as the Mike-EEE account has only 3 pinned and this has occurred several times there.
Well, that did not take long. With only 5 pinned on the Streaming Stick 4k it froze and rebooted the Roku device after about 5 minutes. Report inbound.
And not much longer after that, the Roku Express crashed out as well, with only 4 pins. I miscounted before there are four on this one.
I see now that you are asking for 1-2, but this is not feasible. My parents use these and they get confused easily if things are not where they expect them.
The fact that it is greatly reduced and still occurs within the same timeframe makes me suspect that this is not causing this issue.
I can probably reduce the Roku Express to 1-2 but I do not think that will do anything, but we’ll see.
And the Premiere+ just crashed after reduced pins as well.
I appreciate your patience here as I learn more about Plex. I thought account configurations were linked so that is why I was apprehensive about removing pins. So, I have been using the unit my parents do not use along with my own personal. Even with only two pins I am seeing Roku crashes after about 5-10 minutes of play time.
My guess is that this does not have to do with the pins but the files themselves which are football games and exceed over 2 hours. My hunch is that something is going on with the file length that is inadvertently utilizing memory when loaded and/or played.
Thank You
