Roku, livetv buffering

No worries; I’ve had to troubleshoot some issues with my live TV/DVR usage in the past. I know it can be frustrating. Unfortunately, while there’s great deal more data in the new logs, I still don’t see anything which points to what the root cause is. The playback is proceeding fine one moment and the client reports that it’s buffering the next. There are plenty of warnings, but these same warnings are present during the period of successful playback as well.

Hopefully someone else who’s experienced this and resolved it somehow will stop by and say “Oh, yeah, I’ve seen this. Here’s how to fix it.”

A quick summary, based on the information and logs you’ve provided:

  • The problem doesn’t appear to be client-related as you’ve seen it on multiple different ones.
  • The problem doesn’t appear to be caused by a problem with the tuner as evidenced by the fact that a VLC stream seems to stay up indefinitely (and during the period of disruption on the Plex side) and your DVR recordings from the same tuner(s) are fine.
  • The problem isn’t channel-specific, per your earlier statement.
  • From all appearances (based on the information in the verbose logs) the transcoder is keeping up with the data stream just fine; the “speed” data reports in the logs averages well above 1.x.
  • The logs show various errors and warnings, but none which seem to be specific to the issue, insofar as they present during the earlier, non-problematic portions of the stream as well.

I’ll keep an eye on this thread. If I think of something else, I’ll chime back in.

Bump for support from Plex. Super Bowl is fast approaching…

Which version of Roku OS are you using? The 9.2 update fixed all live TV buffering issues for me.

I am on that version unfortunately.

Bump to make sure this isn’t going away. We really need a response from Plex on this!

Thanks philipsw on the hw encoding suggestion.

Responding to stay in the loop as well as report that I was having issues, but may be resolved now. Also a new-LiveTV user coming from WMC. Been using plex though for years!

I was having Roku LiveTV streaming issues as well. Mostly pixelation on the Roku. Running Windows 7 (soon to be 10) Plex 1.18.3.2156 displayed on Roku 9.2 ultimate. I turned off hardware acceleration (when available) under settings>transcoder, which seemed to resolve my pixelation issue. I will report back if I see anything else weird or have issues. Thanks!

thanks. I continue to have buffering more than it should (Initial start of the stream) but hopefully the hw encoding being turned off helps.

unfortunately I have left hw encoding off, and am continuing to see buffering, pixelation, and general unstable live tv use. This continues to affect both local and remote streams.

While I reported success with Roku OS 9.2, that was specifically on a Roku TV. Using a Roku Streaming Stick+, I’ve notice there are some issues (perhaps with deinterlacing). It appears that 1080i channels are the cause, which it why I think it may have something to do with deinterlacing. Disabling direct play for MPEG2 causes everything to transcode and the issue is then fixed.

Does this help you narrow it down, or is it still very random?

It is random, but happens on all devices. I also have tried with disabling direct play as well already :frowning:
I just wish the logs provided better data as to what is causing the stream to just stop. and then go again. When it happens I can see the server’s cpu drop to idle, and then start back up again. I know that is not useful, in that we already know the transcode is failing before starting again. It’s very frustrating though. I am worried that this isn’t going to be fixed before super bowl.

Bumping. Where is plex support??

It’s been Christmas and the New Year. Hang tight, they’ll probably be more active starting next week, I would think.
