Subtitles never render on screen in the Roku Plex app.
By comparison, subtitles render on plenty of other devices, including macOS and Windows Plex apps, and the Web browser app.
MKV embedded soft subtitle tracks used to render on Plex, but now even these fail to show up in Roku.
This happens with text subtitles.
This happens with soft embedded SRT files.
No error message displays on the app. The UI shows the desired subtitle as selected. However, the subtitles silently fail to display. By now, this issue has existed for many months.
And OpenSubtitles.org query subtitles added to the stream after the fact, have never rendered on Roku since I began using Plex.
Please fix subtitle rendering on the Roku Plex app. I have a backlog of foreign films I would like to be able to enjoy.
Good news, able to show subtitles in an earlier version of the Plex Roku app. Subtitles work on version 6.9.4.7254, and break on 6.9.8.7332. Some change in this range may be responsible for subtitles failing to render on Roku devices.
As a workaround in v6.9.8.7332, I can render subtitles by changing the Burn Subtitles configuration value from “Automatic” to “Only Image Formats”. This works for both individual, per-video playback settings, as well as global, per-device playback settings.
Evidently something has broken in the “Automatic” logic regarding subtitles, and only for Roku, in the version range of 6.9.4 and 6.9.8.
