My Media Server’s processor is not terribly powerful and as a result it cannot transcode all that well. In lieu of this I have all of my media go to my Roku devices at maximum quality. This does not require much processing on the server and the playback is perfect anywhere in the house. However, the same does not hold true for the Xbox 360 and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. The Roku devices don’t have hardly any processing power where as the Xbox 360 does. It seems to me that the Xbox 360 should be able to at least perform everything a Roku does. Has anyone had this same issue or can offer any advice?
The 360 has very poor format support natively. If your videos are not MP4 format with H264 Video and AAC audio, or DIVX video with MP# audio, they will need transcoded.
Even if they are H264/AAC in an MKV, they still need to be remuxed to MP4.
THis is likely your issue.
That is unfortunate, but at least it explains things. Thanks for the response. For a moment I thought I might upgrade the processor on the server, but that certainly doesn’t seem like the right thing to do when a Roku can be had brand new for around $80. I’ll probably just go that route and be done with it. Thanks again.
