After upgrading from a Roku 3 to a Roku Ultra, I started to see occasional HDCP errors in the while watching various shows. Usually this happens for a few seconds off and on in the middle of an episode. Rarely it happens when the episode first starts, but after the opening credits start playing.
All of my other equipment and cabling is the same, and I’ve even previously watched some of the shows using the Roku 3 without any issues. Rebooting the Roku Ultra normally (but not always) clears this up – sometimes I get one or two more after a reboot, but then it is OK again.
So, if only the Roku has changed, and other streaming services played through it do not experience these errors, I can only conclude that there is something about the Plex app on the Roku Ultra that is causing this annoyance.
Is there already a fix in the pipeline or am I’m on my own and outta luck here?
Just to add one more bit of information… I found and installed the Plex app on my LG Smart TV and it never experiences the HDCP errors with the same movies that trigger them on the Roku Ultra Plex App to the same TV. Somewhere someone suggested the HDMI cable might not be “up-to-spec” (as it were) so I upgraded my cable to one rated for 8K video. I would hope that is good enough for Plex/Roku Ultra to play a 720p TV show, but I still get the errors.
I do not get HDCP errors with any other app on the Roku Ultra so the issue seems to be with something Plex related – maybe Plex is doing something “right” that all other apps are doing “wrong?” Or vice-versa? Or at least Plex does differently than all the others?
I have even switched from the Roku Plex app to the LG Smart TV Plex app when the Roku Plex gives me the HDCP error and the LG Plex does not. Then I can switch back and still get the error on the Roku!
So, I ask again, is this known and/or understood? Is there any chance it will be fixed? Ever? Or is it one of those bugs that companies like to ignore because they cannot understand how their code is broken for only a few users? (I’ve been guilty of trying that one myself – but always ended up tracking down the problem and fixing my bug. I really hope Plex does the same.)
Different subject: I wouldn’t mind using the LG Plex app (or the Fire TV Plex app in my bedroom) if the user interface was the same everywhere. Unfortunately, there seem to be small behavioral differences across the Plex app family that kinda drive me nuts because I use at least five different Plex apps now: Roku (2, 3, Ultra and TCL Roku TV), LG Smart TV (Web OS), Fire TV, Android, Web (on Windows) and, finally, the Windows Plex app. Almost identical means subtly different and, apparently, those differences are the features I use most often!
