Roku Ultra Stick+

The reports seem to be flipping around here. You mentioned with Direct Play set to auto, that it will direct play, but subtitles are not showing. Changing the captions mode will not make it transcode.

Try these steps, to verify everything is in order.

  • Open the Plex channel
  • Click your user name, and go to Settings
  • Verify these settings in the Video section
    • Local Quality: Original
    • Remote Quality: Original
    • Direct Play: Auto
    • Allow Direct Stream: checked
  • Verify these settings in the Subtitles section
    • Roku Caption mode: On
    • Burn subtitles: Automatic

Note that changing the settings here will preserve this throughout the app, where changing the settings from within a preplay or during playback will only be for the playback session.

Also ensure Local Media Assets is enabled:
server/settings/agents
under all tabs in shows and movies.

Sorry it was my bad I was trying to many things and I misspoke before. If ‘Direct Play’ is set to auto it transcodes. If ‘Direct Play’ is set to forced it transcodes. In both cases I get subs and video does transcode. If I do “Auto” on Burn Subtitles instead of “Always Burn” that’s when the transcode goes away but there is no sub displayed.

I think you found the problem  The video settings above were correct just like you mentioned BUT my subtitle settings were “Caption mode: Off” and “Burn Sub: Always” I have changed to the settings you recommended and I can now play it without transcode and still getting subs! Working scenario:

Thank you for your help!!!
