Roku update to 9.3.0 causes live tv video to freeze

Thanks for the update. It happens for me on a Roku TV. I hope they fix it.

I can watch mine for a large length of time and have no issue at all and then randomly it will happen, usually when the picture is quite busy or a lot of movement going on in it.

My crap work around is to push up on the remote which jumps into the tv guide and then push back. This seems to refresh the screen and the picture is no longer stuck, until next time. Recordings though, now that is terminal. I end up forcing a transcode otherwise ill sit there getting frustrated every time it happens.

I’m now running Roku 9.4, this is still an issue.

It seems to happen to me right when the big play happens during a football game.

Still happening for me! It is almost unwatchable. How about you fix it so the Roku releases the tuner so I can switch to my Google tv? Doesn’t work if I start watching a live program on Roku then try to switch.

I am having the same problem with a 55ā€ TCL Roku TV.
I have a server with a tenth gen i7 with 10c20t plus an internal ssd for this content. AC WiFi that pulls 450mbps at the TV so the server and wifi are not the issue. Also Hulu and Netflix work flawlessly.

Somewhere between 10-40 minutes the picture will freeze but audio will continue on stuff that is recorded using the Plex DVR.
Any standard Plex content in mkv format works fine.
I turned off mpeg, direct stream and lowered quality to 720p on the Plex App via the TV and it resolved.

Is this just an issue that the Roku in the TV is underpowered and can’t handle trying to convert anything resulting in overheating or something else?

I’m fairly certain it’s an issue with the Roku TV firmware. The issue started with the 9.3.0 update, and as far as I know, it hasn’t been resolved. There probably isn’t anything that Plex can do.

What’s odd, however, is that it appears to be an issue specific to Roku TVs and not the Roku set top boxes. We have since purchased and connected an Apple TV to our Roku TV in our living room (for other reasons), so this issue no longer affects me, but it’s sad to see that it still remains.

Also, I think you can just disable MPEG2 on the Roku TV. That will force it to transcode and the issue shouldn’t occur. Original quality should be fine too.

I can also confirm that on my TCL with built-in Roku, the freezeup problem went away when I disabled MPEG-2. Never saw the freezeup problem with PLEX on a Firestick, only PLEX on TCL built-in Roku.
