Roku v Google TV Plex client?

Server Version#: 1.41.8.9834 (on Mac Mini)

I’ve been using the Roku Blex client on various Smart TV’s for several years, but am looking at a TCL model with Google TV. My initial plan was to buy a Roku box for it, but it would be simpler to just use the Plex client for Google TV. Is this the standard Android
client, or something specialized for Google TV? Any thoughts on Plex’s Roku v. Google TV clients? Stability, performance, features? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Android/Google TV client is in a whole different league than Roku on codec/format support.
  • GoogleTV will have a more advertising heavy interface.
  • Performance will largely be based on specific chipset the TV has. On my Fire Sticks 4K/4K Max device (Android adjacent), the hardware is able to handle L 5.1. Meanwhile, a Roku Streaming Stick 4K of the same price is only L 4.1 compatible.
  • In general it is recommended to buy a TV for the screen/sound quality (if you’re not using an external audio system), and then attach the streaming device you want to that, so you can upgrade it later without buying a new TV. But no harm in trying the GoogleTV experience if it’s there. Even if you were staying with Roku I would recommend getting a Roku Ultra for the actual streaming device instead of using the TV’s own version.
