Rpi Model B - Plex latest image, no video playback & crazy lettering after attempts

So, I ditched XBMC on the rPi and decided it was high time to unify since we use Plex everywhere else in our home.

The installation went just fine using dd to write the image file.  I set everything up just fine by downloading the latest image from https://github.com/RasPlex/RasPlex/releases, I think 0.4.1 is the name.

However, I cannot play any type of file no matter the container, video codec, or audio codec.  It attempts to load, the screen goes black, and then I'm back at the video information screen with flickering.

Further, the lettering becomes extremely odd looking and illegible.  It's like a lot of poofed up white stacked upon eachother and not in any letter form.  A reboot clears up the lettering.  But, playback still fails.

I tried with directplay and transcode.  I tried with cache at 10% and at 1%.

I tried MKV and MP4;  AC3, AAC, and DTS; x264 mainly for video codecs although some others are dribbled about.

Any thoughts out there?  Thanks in advance!!!

Need more info, Pi model and memory config (Rasplex will not work on Model A or 256 Model B ), how many amps output for power supply, HDMI connected to TV or Monitor or analogue or what, type and capacity of SD card, why you didn't install using GetRasplex, have you looked at the FAQS on Rasplex website, etc, etc. give us something to go on as it works for over 10,000 people without problems.

Yeah, let me take a stab and not sound too noobish.  I've Googled like mad.  I've scanned through numerous threads.  I looked at the FAQ.  Just thought it strange how OpenELEC worked smooth for so long.

1.  I have Model B, bought and shipped August 2012.  Per RPi Faq, it should have 512MB because it has a black audio out.

2.  I have the basic default config.txt from the image file of 0.4.1 which shows memory breakdown of "gpu_mem=128" "gpu_mem_256=54" "gpu_mem_512=128".  All three are uncommented.  Later in the file, it shows Rasplex customization of "gpu_mem_256=64"" gpu_mem_512=200" and neither are commented out.  No flags changed by me whatsoever.

3.  I have an 8GB Class 10 sdcard in use.

4.  I cannot use GetPlex because it calls for a .so that is not provided for or readily available on Ubuntu 14.04.  Therefore, I read the FAQ and used the dd writing method without a hiccup.  Afterwards, it expanded on first boot.  It created "/dev/mmcblk0p1" with "system" and the rest became "storage" on "/dev/mmcblk0p2."

5.  I tried with two different PSUs.  Each provide the requisite power to the unit.  I know one was 5VDC, 1A.  I think the other may have been 1.5A or 2A.  I can't recall and I don't have it with me right now.

6.  I tried it connected through HDMI to both my Denon X4100W and my Onkyo TXSR507.  From there, those AVRs are connected to their respective 1080p 3D capable TVs.

EDIT:  Also, I consistently run the latest PMS for Plexpass.

Okay, so I was able to play a video and hear audio but see no video solely through casting to Rasplex from the Plexpass app on Android using "transcoding" at 20Mb/s connection.

Direct stream did not work at all.  I received a message saying "Unable to play media" and to "Please check that this file exists and the necessary drive is mounted."  It took over ten attempts before I got text I could actually read.

However, I cannot do anything from the device through navigation with a remote.  Things get jumbled up very quick from basic scrolling.  Even selecting an item craps out and won't start playing whether transcoding or direct stream is in use.

See attached photos.

I do have the codec keys for my device purchased from the PI store.

What is the network connection?

What is your PMS? What OS, what version, what network connection

Do your other clients require transcoding?

What is the video connection to your TV?

Let's dive in:

1.  The Rasplex is connected to a gigabit network although I believe its NIC is 100m.

2.  I'm using the latest Plexpass 0.9.11.7.  I run Ubuntu 12.04 with all the latest updates.  It is connected to a gigabit network with a gigabit NIC.

3.  Chromecast and my VizioTV require transcoding of some video and almost all audio because they do not support DTS tracks.

4.  By video connection to the TV, I'm not 100% sure what you're after.  I tried the Rasplex with two separate setups.  Each involved HDMI connections to two different AVRs.  Then, the AVRs are connected via HDMI to the TVs.

Can you SSH in to your Pi and run 'free -m' and post the results back here.

@derekcentrico:
Many of your problems seem very odd, especially that text display corruption shown in some of your screenshots.
That and some of the other weird issues makes me worry that you might not have a 512MB unit (which RasPlex needs).

According to my information the earliest model-B units released still had only 256MB RAM, and I do not consider the color of a connector as a reliable test for what memory size the RPi has. It could just be coincidental that a new batch of connectors arrived at the factory around the same time they switched to using 512MB for the later model-B units. So you really should check this to make sure (using the method Ned recommended in his post).

As for the TV connection, I think you should temporarily connect the RPi directly to one of your TV set’s HDMI inputs, just to see if this affects results in any way. It obviously won’t affect some of the weird issues, but it might clarify some aspect of the problems.

As for the PSU’s you’ve mentioned, I strongly recommend using one capable of more than 1A.
I’ve had a lot of different PSU’s myself, and I no longer trust low-end manufacturer specs very much.
Some will happily state capacity of 1A if it is at all possible to get that current, regardless of how it affects voltage drop or stability, which are crucial factors for the stable operation of any computer…

Okay, so I assume I'm lucky enough to have the "rare" 256mb Model B.

rasplex Version: 0.4.1
rasplex git: 76c3ff1ee95c69812a4c735d7b744a77297ddaba
RasPlex:~ # free -m
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 181 152 29 0 3
-/+ buffers: 148 33
Swap: 249 2 247

Even though the latest stable OpenELEC works fine, you think this is the issue for Rasplex?

If so, trying to rig up a test for the TV connection may be unnecessary?

Yep that's a 256Mb Model B, not very rare, over a million sold, that's why you can't run Rasplex, not supported on Model A's or 256Mb Model B's, sorry, thought that would be the problem.

Have to get yourself a shiny new Model B+.

Can you mark this as answered please.

Man what a bummer!  I'm already on Newegg getting one with my Paypal donations from XDA.  lol

I'll make it as resolved and hope it stays that way.

I presume I can pop the current sd-card in and be good to go right out of the box, right?  I don't see why not...

The Model B+ uses a micro SD card, if that's what you have (in an adapter) at the moment then yes you can use that. If you have to get a new one you only need a 4gb card.
