Run multiple media optimization jobs in parallel?

I’m creating optimized versions in my library and it looks like it only runs one at a time. My GPU is being wasted by not being used much.

How can I control how many jobs run in parallel? The setting in “Transcoder” tab for his many jobs to hardware accelerate doesn’t do anything.

You aren’t missing a setting; Plex doesn’t support this.

If the GPU can do multiple simultaneous transcodes, maybe pre-optimization isn’t needed?

I want to optimize media so my downloads are faster (and don’t require transcoding). One at a time is a ridiculous and unnecessary limit.

Creating an optimized version doesn’t always improve download speeds -

Downloads can trigger a new transcoding session if an existing Version doesn’t match perfectly.

A GPU can often transcode fast enough for the Download anyway.

But - agreed; I find pre-optimization useful sometimes, especially on slower servers.

Still, Plex doesn’t support parallel optimization jobs.

It does for me since my devices can direct play optimized files.

It’s less about speed and more about reliability. Downloads (with transcode) is flaky enough that trying to use the feature is frustrating. It fails about half the time and I don’t have the time or patience to baby-sit the downloads job*. So instead of hoping that Plex (the company) fix downloads, I’m hoping they can provide band-aids that at least make the feature usable.

*This isn’t just me. This forum and reddit are filled with tons of bug reports and nightmare stories of downloads being unreliable.

No disagreement about Downloads having issues. It’s working OK for me right now, but it seemed like a real mess when first transitioning from Sync → Downloads.

And no disagreement that parallel jobs would be an interesting feature. Maybe it makes sense to create a #feature-suggestions post?
