I run the PMS qpkg delivered by Plex on a Qnap TVS-672xt. It has an Intel i3-8100T with integrated UHD Graphics 630.
When transcoding streams, the integrated GPU handles this without a sweat, making the CPU run at 5% or less.
As Plex Sync now is history, I am using the Plex optimizer to convert my entire kids movie library for quick downloads to tablets. But the first surprise is that the optimizer only convert one movie at a time, as opposed to multiple transcodes when streaming. The second surprise is that this one-movie-at-a-time conversion makes the CPU load go up from 2% to a steady 24%.
So it seems the Plex optimizer is not using the integrated GPU to convert the movies. Can this be true?
So I just realised you cannot choose on the tablet, to download a certain version of the file. All downloads to a tablet must be initiated from the tablet, and you also cannot choose the resolution to download under the movie itself.
The global setting for download resolution must be set in the tablet Plex app settings.
The good news is, any such download requiring transcoding, seem to be utilising the integrated GPU.
The bad news is, I have 4 kids with a tablet each that needs to be done seperately now.
This could been implemented more smoothly by Plex:
the optimizer should be using the integrated GPU
tablet downlods should be able to download optimized versions
marking multiple files at once for download on the tablet
