Run RasPlex with content from Hard drive

Hi I am new to Raspberry Pi and interested in purchasing one but I cannot find an answer to my question.

Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to a Raspberry Pi and use RasPlex to read the content direct rather than wirelessly from another computer?

I love the interface of RasPlex and if this can be done it would be perfect.

If anyone knows the answer please let me know.

Thanks

Plex is server/client architecture.

This doesn't really make sense.

If you want to play local storage on a raspberry pi, get XBMC via Openelec or RaspBMC

Thank you for your reply.

The reason is I like the RasPlex interface.

So it would not work?

as vulcanjedi says, plex clients need a server no matter what.

Plex Media Server cannot run on RPi.

Therefore you will need to have a server setup somewhere else which will index the medias.

In your case, the hard drive would be better set on the server.

If you just want to play local files on a hard drive connected to the player, then what you're looking for is XBMC :)

Sorry guys, but when I connect to mi mac I can see my movies from my hard disk…

So, if it is not possible Could I connect an NAS to the raspberry by LAN cable?

What model is your NAS? If you connect your NAS to your network by cable, install Plex for NAS (Find installer here https://plex.tv/downloads

Click the NAS button, check if your NAS is compatible, then your NAS will work as a Plex server, this way, all of your Plex Home Theater applications will be able to find Media from your NAS.

Regarding playing from local storage like your PC, it wont work unless you install Plex media server on that PC and choose what folders it should share from.

Rasplex is only a Plex Home Theater center, it's not a Plex media server where it gets the media from, you wouldn't be able to do this unless you run Plex media server somewhere else, and then mapped your external drive which is connected to your Raspberry to the machine that is hosting your Plex media server and then share that content to your Plex Home theather application. This is a very stupid way though as you could've just connected that external harddrive to your plex media server :)

Hi guys,

If i install Raspbian wheezy into RPi.is it works with external Hard drive or not.If yes can you guide me.it will help others also...

I have one more silly question...

I am using NAS drive for server and i have more than 10 TV's in my home. Can i conncet 10 RPi's to all the tv's.it will work streamlessly or not?  or   How many we can use maximum number of plex clients for one plex server?.

I have 5 tv's, 3 tablets, 3 phones all connected to my Plex installation and it works brilliantly. The things you have to consider is bandwidth of your home network - is it enough to handle everyone streaming at once? CPU power in your Plex server - is it powerful enough to transcode for everyone that needs it?

I don't really understand your first question, this is the Rasplex forum, Raspbian is a port of the Debian Unix OS ported for Raspberry PI and nothing to do with Plex, suggest you look at the Raspbian Forums.

Your second question, if it relates to Rasplex, has been answered by @IanCass.

Hi NedtheNerd

Ok fine i will post 1st question on those related forums. But my secound question is related to rasplex only.i have 10 TV's,for 10 TV's i have to connect 10 RPi's.Not include ipads or phones.only RPi's am using. How many MAXIMUM clients(RPi's) we can use for one Plex Server for working STEAMLESSLY.......

Depends on your server, suggest that you ask this question in the Plex Media Server main forum. The Pi running Rasplex is only one of many clients.

Like Ned already told you, that limitation has nothing to do with RasPlex or the RPi. It is mainly up to the capabilities of your Plex Media Server.

Suppose you have 10 RasPlex units playing HD video at the same time. Then the PMS computer will need a gigabit network in order to deliver data with sufficient throughput. And the CPU will need ample processing power in order to handle the transcoding of several simultaneous streams. For so many as 10 of them I would definitely recommend a powerful system with an i7 processor.

And of course it's not just the PMS computer which must be able to live up to this high standard, but also any network switches or router interposed between that computer and the RPi units. For though each RPi unit only has a 100Mbps network port, any switch or router to which the PMS server is connected must be able to accept traffic for all of the RPi units on the one port connected to the server.

Ok fine dlanor,I want to use NAS drive for PMS.Which NAS drive model will recommend for 10 RPi's streamlessly.i have 100Mbps network is there in my home...

If you assume your NAS (and switch) can deliver a full 100Mbit (think more 80Mbit max, due to various overheads in transport protocols), you would theoretically be able to play 4 HD streams with an average bitrate of 20Mbit, or 8 HD streams with an average of 10Mbit...  HDD's don't tend to have an issue supplying that kind of bandwidth, even with random, uncached, small sector size reads, so you're more likely to be limited by the NAS software / hardware and your network.

I use a QNAP TS-659 Pro+ which can run PMS, but can't handle transcoding anything but audio at full speed because it has an Atom D525 (1.8Ghz dual core) CPU.  My PMS runs on a Linux Mint 17 server with a Core i3-4130T CPU which uses a CIFS share to mount the data from my QNAP, works perfectly for me, but I only use 1 stream at a time...
