Server Version#: 4.62.1
Player Version#: 1.33.0.2444-a220eae4
I wanted to ask I have a QNAP right now running my PMS and I love it. Now I am trying to see if I can run a 2nd PMS in case the 1st one goes down due to a malfunction with the QNAP it has happend before. Right now I use the 2nd server which is a TerraMaster 221 to back up all my media in case the QNAP were to go down. So this is what I wanted to do:
PMS 1 running Port 32400 and have PMS 2 Running on a Different Port and if I can will my plex player on my lapotp or iOS know to go to the 2nd PMS if the 1st one were to be down?
I know I am prob not making sense but let me know if I am making any sense.
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by that but if for example playback fails while watching MediaX from PMS1 then it is not going to just grab the file from PMS2 and continue playback as if nothing happened.
You would have two Plex Media Servers, one on each NAS, running simultaneously.
They would both be visible in your Plex clients. If desired, you could pin libraries from both to the clients’ home pages.
If you cannot play from one, you would choose the desired library & media from the other.
The servers are independent of each other. Played/Unplayed status, Libraries shared with other users, etc are not synchronized.
For remote access, if using manual port forwarding, you would map each server to separate IP ports via port forwarding statements in your Internet router. For example, the QNAP could use the default 32400, and the Terramaster could use 42400.
This answered my important part of my question. Now I understand what you said as far as if one goes down the other dosn’t just pickup where the other left off. Is there anyway that the the plex server could be synced up once a night so that unplayed and played are on both servers?
This is a great answer and thanks for it. I am just now trying to figure out if there is any way that I can sync up the servers so that the unplayed and played at least once a day.
I just installed PMS onto my TerraMaster NAS and its working fine locally but when I try to change the Default Port from 32400 to 42400 it will not allow remote access to the server. And I already did the portforward to that NAS. is there somewhere else I need to make the change to the port within the PMS?
You can transfer the whole library and setting from .qpgk/Plex Media Server. This includes the Server ID and settings.
This way you can switch the NASes and your Plex Server will be the same. You only need to take care of running only one of them at a time and portforwarding to the appropriate Server.
Which is hard to accomplish if the QNAP has malfunctioned.
Plex does not support keeping multiple servers in sync with each other.
It can be done, to a degree, but it involves steps outside of Plex’s normal operations - taking the primary offline, copying the database to the secondary, etc. Most of the steps can probably be automated as well.
However, if the QNAP or Plex on the QNAP is unreliable enough to warrant that amount of work, you’re probably better off putting efforts into stabilizing the QNAP.
Keep the Terramaster running as a backup. Use it when the QNAP is unavailable. Just realize that some information will not be synchronized.
I hear you and y’all that have given me input and ideas have been Great. I am going to just do what you have said to do. I am going keep running my QNAP PMS up and have the Terramaster PMS ready for backup purposes if the QNAP goes down.
Sure, maybe I missed this. I was just stating this starting from the title. → Is it possible to sync to (QNAP -) Plex-Server, so that the second one can take over, when the first one dies / is not operational / etc. This is what I am doing, and it’s working just fine.
Of course this will not be possible when the first one is already dead.
There are some solutions floating around to sync up at least the played/unplayed status between concurrently running servers.
But they all require additional software.
