Not trying to duplicate the response, but trans-coding is key. If you plan on using PlexWeb (stream via the browser) or have media that is not explicitly supported by the clients you intend to use, you need to use a (Windows/Linux/Mac) server with enough power to trans-code.
my two cents : i own a Qnap 1079 pro with 3tb drives total 30TB) and it is a serious heavy duty nas.
It can easily handle any transcodes (even 2 at the same time without any issues). That is my experience. So i dont think with such a heavy NAS you need an extra pc for transcoding. I dont know however about much lighter models of QNAP.

hope this helps.
Same here, and happy as well, but....
I has seen it been drawn to it's knees, but to be frank, I also suspect that a full-blown PC would have been with that MKV....
Sandly, I haven't got that MKV anymore, cuz I remuxed it, and forgot to keep a sample....SIGH.....
Me too: as long as NAS is strong enough, I prefer it way more than a PC for Plex. Mine easily transcodes anything to multiple clients simultaneously. Given the NAS you are considering, you should be just fine. More over, you should be very happy :)
I am looking at this bad boy and all i am thinking to myself is "damn, this thing is expensive." No one man should have all that power. B)
I have a ts-559 and it stream to 4 devices simultaneously. Knowingly. I said knowingly because my friends are always streaming from my house since i have the highest upload speed among them and i don't know when they are streaming. Thanks to plex i can't :D ...I know i know that was a cheap shot LOL. They will eventually add the 'active user' feature very soon i hope. I am able to do all that streaming with phpvirtualbox install on my qnap running my musicbrainz mirror server. That server requires a lot of cpu.
By the way i have WD red drive. The 3TB is about 150. Really good read and write speed for a nas. Best in the market.
The only regret i have is i should of put just a little bit more money and got the TS-569 model which comes with an HDMI port.

It's amazing, I was literally just now thinking exactly the same thing: I can't believe that you can let multiple people stream from you, yet have no ability to see who is streaming now, bandwidth used, etc. You also have no ability, short of killing Plex, to stop individual user stream, or terminate them on schedule. Yesterday I found out that for three days, my dad forgot to turn off his Roku, while it was streaming from my house, one TV episode at a time, non-stop... He'd just turn off his TV and that's it...

My NAS has an HDMI port, but... it sits in a rack, in my basement: too far from anywhere I watch TV in my house. Plus, with media players being so good at streaming whatever I throw at them, never really even thought of using the HDMI port on Qnap...
I presume your NAS sits somewhere close toy your TV? But then you are forced to use the Qnap remote app, right?

That's hilarious. Me and Orca was making fun of this guy for requesting a Samsung client enhancement to turn off the TV when his wife falls asleep and forgot to turn it off. I will find the post so you can be his +1 LOL :D

I want to add more users to share my contents with so i don't have to use as much storage. If i have a movie and i am sharing with you, it makes no sense for you to have the same movie. That just save you a few gig of space. The whole purpose of me getting into plex is to be as cheap as possible. I downgraded my cable channels to only the basics so when niece and nephews come over they can watch their cartoons.
After i thought them how to get to plex they don't even care about regular channels anymore. I was shocked. My niece is 4 and my nephew is 5 1/2 and they both know how to get to plex to watch their cartoons. Yeah yeah i know...im a proud uncle. :D
Some people don't mind spending money on this but i do. :D Because of this missing feature i can't share with too many people and exhaust my upload.
I want to be share my contents with the world :)

My friend is testing out the HD packages with XMBC and Chrome. I wanted to test that too but i don't have an HDMI port. Actually it's not too far and not too close. It sits right next to my desktop on my desk and my TV is about 10 feet away and my other TV in my bedroom is about 30 or more away.
It will depend, for example in, here I use a Threadripper 1920x 24/7 as Plex Server and mining cryptocurrencies as a beast, flawless, but I was thinking in buying a DS916+ for NAS upgrade, I would have to remove 2x 8TB WD Red HDD and 2x128GB 850 EVO SSD (for NAS cache) from the PC and retire/sell my Dlink DNS 327L.
Again, the answer is: depends, it will depend on your usage, for example, since I use the PC 24/7 here, I have no reason to use a better NAS, also the new NAS would oblige me to upgrade my router to get native LACP support (Link agregation).
