Ryzen Threadripper 2920X can only handle 2-3 transcodes?

Hello,

My PMS setup includes a Threadripper 2920X and a GTX 1060 6gb as GPU.
The idea would be to handle 8/10 concurrent transcodes given that the GPU would handle 2 transcodes (given the Nvidia limitation of 2 concurrent sessions) and then the rest would fall back to the CPU.

According to the cpubenchmark.net site, the score of this CPU is 22.087, which should be enough to handle 6/8 transcodes (or am I wrong?).
But then, I have tested with and without hardware transcoding and have realised that only 2 or 3 transcodes could be handled by the CPU.

There must be something I’m missing. Does anyone have any idea?

Also, I tried the patch to get rid of the 2 session limit my GPU has, but I found it to be very unstable and at some point the Task Manager in Win10 showed hundreds of processes related to the GPU. Has this happened to you as well?

Thank you very much in advance!

It all depends on what type of source files you are transcoding.
The number of 6 to 8 concurrent trancodes should be achievable with medium bitrate (10mbps) H.264, 1080p files.
However, if you are using raw UHD rips, then the 2-3 trancodings sound plausible…

Thanks @OttoKerner, I think you’re right. Not the result I was expecting from CPU transcoding though.

^^^ meaning without hardware support.
Handling H.265 material requires a shedload of cpu resources. It is amazing that you can manage 2 to 3 streams of H.265 with this cpu at all.

Yeah, lately I tend to use H.265 a lot because of the resulting file size.

As you can see, this comes at the price of a much higher cpu load – both on the server and the playback devices.
So unless you have hardware support which can deal with H.265, you better invest in additional media storage space and go back to H.264 until H.265 hardware support has become so pervasive, that every client device can handle it.
Maybe it is also worth thinking about switching to Intel cpu, due to their integrated QuickSync unit.

Thank you @OttoKerner, it is very interesting.
Then would you say it would be better an Intel CPU with QuickSync or, given that I already have the Threadripper 2920X, a Quadro P2200 without the 2 stream limitation?

Sorry, I cannot tell you anything about those ridiculously-priced Quadro cards. I have no experience with them.
(I reckon you can get a new MoBo and an Intel cpu for the price of a Quadro card.)
