Same title in multiple libraries conflict

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: multiple clients

I have two movie libraries, “Movies” for DVD/BD rips, and “UHD Movies” for 4K rips. The folder locations for each are unique, no overlap. I have many titles in the UHD library that have same file name, and same title (e.g. “Lucy”, “Atomic Blonde”)

When I add such a conflicting title to the UHD library, it messes with any title in the Movies library wih same title name. For instance:

  • If I change the cover art on the UHD library entry, it deselects the art on the title in other library - I have to reselect the art for the Movies library title;
  • The “played” status is shared - if I marked played or unplayed on title in one library, it affects the other library.
  • I have the UHD library excluded from the dashboard - but the matching title from the Movies library is still displayed in the dashboard as “continue watching”.

Why are movies in separate libraries not treated as separate and distinct in Plex?

That’s very odd. Plex should separate libraries(and does for me). I don’t know why this would be happening.

I do this all the time(edit title names, change posters, etc) and plex will not change/modify my other libraries entries. Plex has never messed with my main movie library while I’m changing stuff up on my tester libraries.

There was a bug introduced(since fixed) many, many moons ago that affected “Include in Dashboard” but I haven’t seen that issue for a long time now.

Because the files in your regular and your 4K library are ultimately the same movie.
If both libraries use the same metadata agent, then both files get the same ‘ID number’ (which corresponds to the ID of this movie on the IMDb).
If two files have the same ID, they are the same movie.
That’s why Plex is offering you both files in Continue Watching.

A workaround is to use different agents (‘Plex Movie’ vs. ‘TMDB’) for your two movie libraries, so that the ID number is totally different, even if the same movie is on both libraries.

Thanks for that information. Followups:

  • Do I have to remove the library or library entries, then scan, if I change the agent on some library to get it to reassign IDs? Or just rescan the library and it will replace entries?
  • Since I was happy enough with the “Plex Movie” agent metadata, can I move it before the “TMDB” entry in the “The Movie Database” and it will be used in preference? There appears to be no way to deselect the TMDB subagent in the list, only move it.
  1. unfortunately remove everything. (Easiest to simply delete the whole library)

  2. yes, you can do that
