Samsung 4K 2020 TV Tizen 5.5, Plex 5.7.1 Issues playing subtitles

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Hello. I´ve got problem with subtitles on my new Samsung 2020 tv. Tizen 5.5, Plex 5.7.1. Some combination of video format, audio and srt subtitles won´t play a movie. When I turn off sub., movie plays normally. I´ve got Synology server DS418play, powerfull enought. Before I had an old Samsung 2016 TV and there was no problem like this.
Going to be some update to fix this problems?

Thanks for answer.

If the audio is transcoding and you enable SRT subtitles, Plex transcodes the video.

Samsung TVs do not support dts or TrueHD audio, so playing either of those formats results in Plex Media Server transcoding the audio.

Details:

  • Transcoded audio means Plex direct streams the media.
  • Plex streams to Tizen 5.5 TVs using the HLS protocol.
  • The HLS protocol does not support subtitles when direct streaming.
  • As a result, Plex has to burn in the subtitles which requires a video transcode.
  • Burning in the subtitles uses the CPU, even when the video is transcoded on the GPU.
  • The burning process is single threaded, and Intel Celeron processors, which are used by Synology, have low single thread scores.
  • Therefore, it is common to see buffering, delayed playing, etc when streaming transcoded video with subtitles from Synology NAS.

Thank you for explanation. I understand now.
Do you know witch TV brands has no problem with this ? 2020 TVs

Thank you.

Unfortunately, there is no master list of the capabilities & limitations of the Plex TV apps. Given the number of manufacturers and models that would probably be impossible to keep current.

Here’s the ones I know about.

One more limitation for Samsung and LG TVs: Enabling image based subtitles, PGS or VOBSUB, forces a video transcode. I do not know if this happens due to a protocol limitation or a limitation of the TV itself.

What codecs are supported will vary by manufacturer. I am not aware of any TV that can direct play TrueHD audio. Expect that TrueHD audio will always be transcoded when using a TV based Plex app.

2020 LG TVs do not support dts audio. LG dropped support starting with either the 2019 or 2020 models. Earlier WebOS models support dts audio.

Regarding transcoded audio & subtitles:

LG and Samsung have the same limitations.

TVs running Android TV, such as Sony, should direct play image and text based subtitles even if the audio is transcoding (i.e. no video transcode). This was resolved with version 8.0 of the Plex for Android / Android TV app last April. FYI, also applies to mobile Android devices (phones, tablets) and Android TV based streamers such as the Nvidia Shield and Amazon FireSticks.

I do not know how other Smart TVs such as Vizio & Roku TVs handle subtitles. You might ask or scan the posts in their sections of the forum.

Again, Thank you very much for answer! So, Sony android TV could be the solution? Or update from Samsungs site? I am sorry, my english is not good.

I’ve got a 2020 Samsung UHD SmartTV and a same/similar issue.

For some reason the new Early access app that installs by default from the store doesn’t have a consistent decision on when to transcode audio. I have EAC5.1 in my .mkv files and sometimes it transcodes to AAC while sometimes it direct plays it. But whenever you enable ANY kind of SRT subtitles it will be more likely to decide to transcode audio in that moment and therefor transcode video as well since subs are present this time.

My solution was to go to the app settings and opt out of the early access version. The old app is not very user friendly compared to the new one but at least it works as intended and direct plays every supported format now.

If no dev sees this, I will make a new post just for this.

You could always buy a external device such as the Nvidia Shield Pro which can play anything you can throw at it. There are lots of threads here with issues relating to using the plex app on TV’s do to TV limitations. I used the Tizen app on my Samsung but finally gave up and got a shield, and never looked back.

Thank you all for your advice. Today I managed to get the TV back to the store, where I got my money back. I’ll think of another TV to buy. Alternatively, TV + external device. It’s ridiculous that the 5 year old TV I had before, had no problem.

I am also thinking of either ditching Plex or ditching Samsung TV altogether.
Did you find a TV that works?
