Samsung 4K 2020 TV Tizen 5.5, Plex 5.7.1 Issues playing subtitles

If the audio is transcoding and you enable SRT subtitles, Plex transcodes the video.

Samsung TVs do not support dts or TrueHD audio, so playing either of those formats results in Plex Media Server transcoding the audio.

Details:

  • Transcoded audio means Plex direct streams the media.
  • Plex streams to Tizen 5.5 TVs using the HLS protocol.
  • The HLS protocol does not support subtitles when direct streaming.
  • As a result, Plex has to burn in the subtitles which requires a video transcode.
  • Burning in the subtitles uses the CPU, even when the video is transcoded on the GPU.
  • The burning process is single threaded, and Intel Celeron processors, which are used by Synology, have low single thread scores.
  • Therefore, it is common to see buffering, delayed playing, etc when streaming transcoded video with subtitles from Synology NAS.
