Samsung TV plex transcodes unsupported audio encoding to AAC not AC3

Server Version#: 1.15.3.876
Player Version#: 3.92.3

I have a Samsung Series 8 KS8005 TV connected to a Samsung HW-M550 soundbar. The soundbar has the addition Samsung SWA-8500S kit connected providing the system 5.1 channels.

From the Plex client on the Samsung when I play media with audio EAC3 or AC3 everything plays as it should and sounds great. When I play media with audio (DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD) plex media server transcodes the audio to AAC rather than AC3. AAC audio quality is quite low and I have to have the volume cranked to 60 for it so sound as loud as EAC3 or AC3 at 25.

Can I edit a configuration file so unsupported audio is configured to AC3? This giving be a bitrate of 640kbps and should improve overall sound/audio experience.

Yes, I have the same issue, actually, its worse. The transcoding is too slow and cause hiccups and stopped displaying subtitles. I am now converting all DTS to AC3 to avoid the issue.

I have a KS8000 too, and recently noticed that the latest Samsung Plex App have been converting all DTS to AAC, even when I have DTS (DCA) checked in the Setting -> Audio. This USED to work a few version work.

I also experience hiccups when playing DTS content. I do have the impression it is not transcodingspeed related in my case as 24p content plays fine but 23.976p content has hiccups.

You could be experiencing an issue because the tv has a limited network connection speed. If the bitrate is too high people are seeing Buffer/studder in playback.

I have tested it, neither the server nor the client are showing high networkload (or any other load for that matter). Also, it is not happening when videostream is clean 24p and not 23.976.

Would be nice to try AC3 transcode as OP asked for and see if it still has the same issue.

just a thought, but you could try and have plex make an optimized file for TV’s. Then check the “get info” for both to see whats different. It would be interesting to know what on the original file Plex may think there is an issue with.

I haven’t had a chance yet but when I get some free time I will have a look on my Plex Server for the configuration file that tells the Samsung plex client how to handle media. Possibly in here we can change the audio transcode to be AC3 rather than AAC. It would make more sense as the Samsung’s are compatible with Dolby Digital.

I don’t know if anyone has achieved this yet…

Could anyone from the Plex support team answer this?

I tried by editing client XML files… but I seem to be doing it wrong. removed every AAC reference in the Tizen XML and yet it still just transcoded to AAC. Didnt get any further yet and reverted to the originals for the time being. Feedback from Plex team would indeed be welcome.

The issue is the incompatible audiostream. I tried both DTS and FLAC now which it will recode. The recode works flawless if the video plays clean 24p but it will introduce stuttering on Tizen in my case when transcoding for 23.976p. that is why I would like to test with encoding audio in another format than AAC so I can rule out the encoder.

Tonight I decided to be lazy and not use my KODI+DSPlayer+MadVR/PlexKodiConnect to watch my movie. My Samsung app actually played DTS 5.1 directly without transcoding it into AAC! DON’T BREAK IT!

Plex for Samsung version 3.92.3 Tizen 2.4.0

some samsungs can direct play DTS.

If there are multiple audio files, you can get on the webui and change the default audio for the movie or show you have. For example, I have the Avengers that contains audio formats in DTS, AAC and AC3. When I go to that movie on the UI, the audio is listed in yellow and has a drop down listing all the audio formats that are included in the file. Changing it there will change the default audio of the file when played on any device.
