I have a ton of .ISO files (~3000) previously ripped by AnyDVD. I’m converting over to use Plex, so I am now starting to convert those to .MKV files where I pick the appropriate track (1 out of sometimes 2 dozen tracks). I wanted to double check w/ the hive mind before I go delete my ISO files. I’ve converted about 40 out of the 3000 just to get a decent sample size of learnings before I do something destructive.
After I’ve verified that I did choose the correct track (sometimes there are a few close choices), is there any reason I SHOULDN’T delete the ISOs? They do take up a TON of space. It seems as though I don’t really need to worry about locating subtitle information as Plex can download that in real time.
Any other considerations before I nuke my “originals”?
FWIW: I’m doing a simple MAKEMKV so I’m keeping the original content (no conversion/compression yet).
The only thing I’d say is, you could change the default settings in MakeMKV to only save audio and subtitle tracks in your chosen language rather than all of them… this would allow you to cut down on some of the filesize… HD Audio tracks can be very very large, and when there’s Spanish, French, English, etc, that problem becomes quite a large problem…
I kept them around until I started running out of room (I had enough room for both the ISO and mkv’s for a while).
at first I was ripping all of the extras and whatnot, but eventually settled on just the main movie, primarily due to all the manual work involved in trying to get extras to work/show up properly in plex.
Eventually I was secure enough in my faith of mkv’s and in plex itself to start removing most of them.
I still have a bunch of ISO’s of stuff that that the original disk was damaged or lost, or otherwise irreplaceables/desirable enough to keep around for nostalgia/personal reasons or reference etc.
