"Scan my library automatically" vs "Scan my library periodically"

I have the first option checked. I assumed this would auto-add files added to my library folder to Plex. But it does not seem to do this all the time and I frequently have to do a manual check.

I guess my question is, should the “scan my library periodically” be used as a backup for the “automatically”, in case the “automatically” misses something?

Or is there something wrong with my “automatically” that it is not always catching changes?

“scan my library automatically” should detect any changes to files and reflect those changes in your library.

You should also enable ‘allow partial scans’

If your storage is local it should just work.
If your storage is a network share - it could be problematic.
