Server Version#:1.41.0.8992-8463ad060
Not sure if this is a server question or a client question, but each time I add content to my Plex server and scan for the new content either in TV shows or movies it scans and adds them just fine, then scans for the intros and credits.
While it’s scanning for the intros and credits you CAN NOT start playing anything on the roku client. If something is already playing it continues to play just fine, but if you try to start a new show or movie, it give you the wait wheel and just spins for several minutes.
Usually it will get to 13% (the first step that usually shows in the progress wheel) but it will just stay there, again for up to about 4-5 minutes. Then it will report that it couldn’t play and you can retry go on to the next item or cancel. If we retry four or five times it sometimes loads, sometimes not.
I’ve checked the server while it’s behaving like this, and it shows almost NO usage at all: CPU at 4-20%, 10G RAM available, no GPU activity and minimal harddrive or network access .
If I try from the windows client at the same time, it seems to hesitate for a few moments, but then plays just fine.
Any ideas of what might be the issue? Anyway I can set it to scan for intros and credits at a specific time rather than when they’re added? I like having the intros detected, but this is unmanageable.
You can separately configure when intro and credits are detected (also chapter/preview thumbnails and other settings).
Options are a) never, b) as a scheduled task, and c) as a scheduled task and when media is added.
Scheduled tasks run during the server maintenance window, which is configured in Settings → Scheduled Tasks.
Intro Detection analyzes the first audio track of the media file. My experience is that it is usually fast, taking just a few minutes when I add a new season to a TV show (even on a NAS with a Celeron CPU).
Credit Detection analyzes the video and is more compute intensive. It hits the CPU harder and takes a longer time to complete.
You might also try setting Marker Source to “both, try online first.” If the markers exist in Plex’s online database, the system will download them. If not, they will be generated locally, then uploaded to the database.
FYI, if you’ve multiple Plex servers, you can offload credit detection. Set the server where you want detection to occur to “both, try online first.” Set the server where you do not want detection to occur to “only online.” Plex will upload credit markers from the server where detection occurs. It will then download the credit markers to the server configured for “online only.”
Thanks for your response! I found that and set it to do each as a scheduled task, added a new episode to a show, scanned library files.
It found the new episode, and I checked the ‘activity’ to confirm it wasn’t searching for credits etc. I then went to the roku and tried to watch the new episode… and it did the same thing. Sat there with the wheel for a minute or so, then went to 13% then did nothing. I backed out of that and tried another show that had been on the server for weeks and it did the same thing.
So it apparently wasn’t that it was scanning for intros that caused the problem.
It appears that for some reason any time I add content, it won’t work on roku (any of the 3 we have) for 15-20 minutes and then it just starts working fine again.
Again, it doesn’t show ANY activity on the server PC, CPU remained at 2-4% minimal activity on the network or SSD.
Any idea what might be going on or other things to check?
