Scanning is randomly failing - Marking media unavailable

Server Version#: Version 1.25.5.5492
Windows 10 21H2 - Fully patched
Player Version#:

I have multiple folders shared in my libraries (mostly network shares). In the last couple weeks my scanning basically crashes it seems and marks a lot of my media as unavailable (trash can), but it is in fact available and playable locally and remotely with friends. I’m trying to find a root cause on why this is happening.

Logs show many of these entries:

ERROR - Error opening file - Too many open files (24)

WARN - Error scanning directory, we’ll skip and continue: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: The system cannot open the file:

It seems that initially I get the error on “too many open files” and then it starts to have a ton of the “boost errors, the system cannot open the file” on that particular media path that it’s currently scanning.

Any ideas?

Could it be this Linux Tips - #9 by ChuckPa

I’m running PMS on Windows. Do I need to apply these linux settings on my files shares where my media is shared?

No, if its windows then it’s something else.

I never use windows so I’ve no idea why you’d get those errors which would usually be related to ulimits, sorry.

Edit: you do say you use network shares. Can you say a bit more about your setup. Is your media on a linux based server? If so I’d start by checking the ulimit settings. To many open files in my experience has always been related to open file handles. Maybe a copy of your server logs would also help to debug.
