Plex will not scan movie libraries

** Plex fails to do Movie - “Scan Library Files” - Quits prematurely**

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6316
Player Version#: 4.93.2

This came out of nowhere. Yesterday 10-29-22 everything was acting normal and then today 10-30-22 I added a movie to one of my movie folders and it did not add to the library. The partial scan only lasted less than 30 seconds. I tried putting it in a different folder and the same thing happened, a partial scan started but ended quickly and no addition to the library.

I then implemented a full library scan, but only 6 movies were scanned and the scan quit. After some trouble shooting I decided to try scanning my Concert Videos library, as this is also a movie library and the same thing happened, only 6 videos were scanned and the scanner quit.

  1. I did nothing to the Plex Server computer between yesterday and today.
  2. I cleared cookies and cache on my browser that is on the computer I normally use to no effect.
  3. I tried loading the webapp on the Plex Server computer to the same result.
  4. A library scan of my TV shows worked fine.
  5. Analyzing the movie library took an hour and ran though all movies.
  6. I have 6042 movies and 305 Concert Videos.
  7. At this point it seems I can not add any new movies until I can get the scanning function to work.
  8. The Server is Windows 10 Pro with all updates running on an Intel i9-9880H and an SSD512GB.

I am in serious need of help to correct this issue, please.

Thanks Gary

What OS is the server on?

Since the TV folder seems to be working normally this sounds like a permission issue I’ve seen people have using Linux. There is apparently a limit to how many files you can add and it sounds like you might be there

I’m not a Linux guy, so I can’t give you detailed instructions but if my hunch is correct that’s what you should be googling or searching for here in the forum

Darn, I thought I put all the important facts in my post. The Server is Windows 10 Pro with all updates running on an Intel i9-9880H and an SSD512GB.

Adding files is one problem and doing a scan is another. Even if I had had reach the limit, which I very seriously doubt to add more files, why aren’t I able to do a full Library scan?

Thanks for your suggestion.

No, if this is Windows the file limit is not a thing

When you say you put the movie in a different folder, does that mean a different library also? Or just a different folder that also gets scanned into the same library?

How many movies have you added that refuse to show up?

Are you sure the title you’re having trouble with isn’t being matched as a duplicate to another movie you already have?

Your scanner activity doesn’t sound completely unusual to me. Mine, with approximately the same amount of movies acts similarly under the same circumstances

I only have two movie libraries, Movies and Concert Videos. So I tried it on a different folder on a different hard drive, but in the same Movie library.

In my ongoing testing and troubleshooting I found another movie to add to my library and it added with no problem, so there must be an issue with the particular title that Plex doesn’t want to add.

But a full scan of a library is just that, not 6 titles of now 6043. This is something I will be calling tech support tomorrow to get help with.

I appreciate your support.

Thank Gary

Can you perform a scan wait 5 minutes and upload your server log?

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-10-31_12-33-22.zip (5.5 MB)

There you go. Hope you can help with this. Very much appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

What file did you add before scanning (name and location)? Im not seeing anything obvious.

FYI - I have started a new post where I think I should have in the first place. Maybe someone else will be able to figure it out.

I didn’t add any file, I simply ran a full library scan of my Movies library. It scanned 6 movies and quit. I then waited 5 minutes and downloaded the logs and then uploaded them to my post.

I was mistaken in it not being able to do a partial scan and add a movie. That function is working, it turned out Plex didn’t like the TV documentary Movie and wouldn’t add it even though is is listed at IMDb and TMDB.

My ongoing issue is with doing a FULL SCAN of my movie libraries. Same problem with my Concert Videos as it too is a Movie Library.

The very last movie I added was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

S:\Plex\Movies (SD)\Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) [480p]5.1 DD\Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) [480p]5.1 DD.mkv

According to your logs this title was added to your “Movies” library:
