Scanning Library Files

Gentlemen,

Curiously, what is PMS doing exactly, when it’s scanning my library files? For the last day or 2, my poor little Syno has been at 100% disk utilization and 35% CPU, because PMS is scanning various library files. I haven’t added any new content, but did label all of my content in a particular library. However, PMS is scanning all of my libraries, and not just the one that I modified. What’s the best way to ensure that PMS isn’t encountering any issues or problems, which might cause the scan(s) to take so long?

Thanks!

Hey Trumpy,

I added multiple labels (keywords) to all of my “how to” movies, under the Sharing tab, that is accessed via the Edit button.

Resource Monitor is how I saw that PMS is causing the elevation in CPU & Disk usage.

The media is stored: /volume1/Media/How-To Videos, and then in sub-folders. (I’ve followed all of your rules, to ensure it’s setup as you recommend)

I did create a new library that is a subset of an existing library, so that I can share it, without sharing the parent and all of its children. For instance, if “Media/How To Videos” exist as a Library, I created a new Library for “Folder B”, so that I could share it, without giving access to “Folder A” & “Folder C”

/Media/How-To Videos
/Folder A
/Folder B
/Folder C

/Media/How-To Videos was an existing Library that included the sub-folders A, B, & C. I then added a new Library of /Media/How-Tw Videos/Folder A to so that I could Share it, but not the other folders.

What I’ve noticed is that /Media/How-To Videos/, /Media/How-To Videos/Folder A, and /Media/Movies are all being continually scanned.

Good to know that adding Labels (not tags), won’t trigger a scan.

Is there any way that I can view the logs, and determine what’s going on? I’m curious to know if there are any issues that might be causing the scan(s) to take so long, or continuously trigger?

Got it with the logs. I’ll take a peek.

As for the folder structure, curiously, what’s wrong with doing the following? I do understand that scanning the parent, will also scan the child. Is doing that a bad thing for PMS?
/Media/How-To Videos - Library
/Media/How-To Videos/Folder A - Library

Also, I did noticed that after I added the labels to the various movies in /Media/How-To Videos/Folder A, that a scan kicked off of /Media/How-To- Videos AND /Media/Movies, which I found curious.

Yes. So it could be coincidental that this triggered at the same time that I’d updated the Labels.

Daily, which I think is too often, but there’s no greater frequency.

Is it necessary or even beneficial to have the library scanned that often, or at all? I think it might be better to only have it scan when the folder is modified. Thoughts?

Got it.

In this instance PMS is running on my Synology box, which is also where the media is stored. I’m assuming that PMS can determine that media has been modified, in this instance?

I’ll disable Scan my library periodically, and leave Scan my library automatically the only scan enabled, unless you feel it’s better to use Run a partial scan when changes are detected instead of the other 2?

Done! Thank you my friend! As usual, your information & help is very much appreciated! :star_struck:

 - Cheers mate!

Hey Trumpy,

So today, my Library files are scanning, but I can’t get play any videos. When I sign into PMS, I’m told Server settings are unavailable. when I click on anything, including Console. The Activity menu is spinning, and when I mouse over it, it shows that it’s scanning my How-To’s.

I added some new content to /Media/How-To Videos/Folder A last night, but this morning when I went to play it, it wasn’t showing up in PMS. In Library’s, in Plex, I clicked on `/Media/How-To Videos/Folder A’ and it immediately started syncing.

As I write this note, the Syncing has stopped, but the new content refuses to play, yet all of the old content plays just fine. :sob:

Heya Trumpy,

Let me see if I can produce them for you, as I was getting the Server settings are unavailable. message when I clicked on anything in Settings, including Troubleshooting. I may bounce the PMS service.

Had to bounce the service, and now PMS appears to be happy. Here are the logs:

Plex Media Server Logs_2018-12-17_15-43-38.zip (4.5 MB)

Sorry, I didn’t mean syncing, I meant scanning. I moved new content into the /Media/How-To Videos/Folder A yesterday, PMS didn’t show it until I clicked on the library, and then it started to scan.

What network errors/issues did you see? I wasn’t aware that I was having any. My internet connectivity hasn’t gone done in months.

Since I bounced the PMS service on the Synology box, Plex has been normal. All of the videos play as expected, including the new content from yesterday.

Hey Trumpy,

I kept seeing those timeout errors, but assumed that the results were coming in slower than expected from the source. I have SUPER fast 1.2GB/sec internet at home. Gotta love fiber optics!, so I don’t believe the issue was related to my internet connection.

I know that clicking on an individual Library doesn’t or shouldn’t kick off a ‘scan’, but it does show the contents of the library in the pane to the right, and that’s when the scan started. I don’t know if that’s weird or not.

The folder containing the new movies nor the movies themselves showed up, until I opened the library in the Plex web app. I’d previously tried to access the folder via Plex on my Apple TV, but it wasn’t there. I’d only added 5 movies, ranging in length from 5 minutes to 20 minutes, so they were relatively small. It appeared to me that theScan my library automatically feature didn’t start as it should have, since I’d added the content 12 hours prior.

‘Bounce’ is a term that has been used in the IT world for years. It means to quickly take a something down and bring it right back up. Like bouncing a server, service or computer; quickly shutting it down and bring it back up.

Yes, I restarted the PMS service in Packages on my Synology.
