Scheduled recordings completely disappeared from schedule without recording

I have two shows (Bull and NCIS on CBS) scheduled to record all episodes/new airings only (screenshot attached). I set up the recordings this past weekend (11/18) and confirmed in my server’s recording schedule that both shows were scheduled to record new episodes last night (11/21).

This evening, I found that neither show was recorded and my server’s recording schedule for yesterday no longer displays either show (screenshot attached). The two shows are still configured to record in the future and still appear in my recording priority list. There were other shows scheduled to record last night and those shows did record successfully and also still appear in yesterday’s recording schedule. There were no more than two shows scheduled to record at the same time (including the ones that disappeared). Additionally, the shows that disappeared were ranked higher in the priority list than the other shows scheduled to record last night.

I just purchased an HDHomerun Connect Duo and Plex Pass lifetime subscription to use Plex for Live TV and DVR. I am very unhappy about my shows not getting recorded and completely disappearing off of the recording schedule. I have no idea what happened and I am very concerned about it happening again and that I may have wasted my money on something that doesn’t work.

I think that I found other discussions that talk about recordings disappearing. Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround to ensure that recordings do not disappear from the schedule? Is there a timeline for a fix? Does Plex have an issue tracking system that is made available to customers to report and track progress on defects?

Logs would be necessary to determine why the shows did not record.

Attached is the server log from the morning of 11/18 (when I set up the recordings) through this morning. We also had a recording abort this morning at 8am. This morning’s recording was caused by an actual error and shows up in the server’s recording schedule with a yellow “!”. The shows that disappeared on 11/21 left no indication of any type of event or failure. They just disappeared. Both incidents are concerning.

Please let me know if there is additional info/logs needed and which ones.

Please attach all server logs. Settings/Server/Help, click the download logs link. This will create a zip file, upload the zip file. The PMS logs often fill up and create new versions so the Plex Media Server.log file often only covers a short period of time, mine normally covers less than one hour. If you can provide the show information that would also be nice, knowing the 8:00 am time helps. May not be able to see anything in the logs from 11/21 if they don’t go back that far.

Just got on my computer and looked at the log file you submitted. While it does cover the entire time period from November 13 - today there is not enough information in the log to see what is happening other than some Transcoder error messages. I know there are some patches currently being tested dealing with the Transcoder and some aborted recordings. You should turn on Debug logging in the Server Settings. Debug logging provides more information to help diagnose recording issues but it does write more information to the log files. Don’t turn on Verbose logging unless asked by a Plex Employee when working with them on a specific issue.

I just turned on debug logging and will repost log files if I have more recording issues.

I have the exact same issue, I’d set ‘Dave Gorman: Modern Life is Goodish’ to record every Tuesday at 10pm a few weeks ago, it recorded the first couple but for both last week and this week it’s not recorded them and the entry for this weeks has completely disappeared from the recording schedule but the one for next week is still there. I’ve attached my log files too.

What are your “Keep” settings in Advanced?
I have found that “Keep Episodes for XX Days” and “Keep XX Episodes” tie to the original air date, and not to recording date.

As a result (and this boggles my mind) any show set with “Keep Episodes for XX Days” which has fully completed its run will automatically delete all recordings.

“Keep XX Episodes” will only keep the most recently originally aired XX episodes. If your hopper is full of the newest episodes, all others are recorded and discarded immediately.

My inner Spock is driven mad.

@ThatDeltaGuy Looks like your log has no activity from 22:50 last night until 8:06 this morning. I am seeing an exit code for the Plex processes that were running at 22:50 that indicates the computer was logged off. At that point the recording was aborted. Apparently someone or something shut down the computer or just logged off.

Or that…
Trust the experts.

I upgraded to 1.9.7.4460 shortly after my last post and waited to see how it behaved since many of the bug fixes in the release notes had to do with DVR. Unfortunately, I have had several recordings fail over the past week+ with a yellow warning stating “transcoder error”. I also had another major failure:

On Wednesday (11/29), Plex had a problem at the beginning of a recording and has failed to record any shows since. I checked the recording schedule on Thursday and it still displayed the unrecorded shows on Wednesday’s schedule, but there was no actual video recorded and no indication in the UI of failure. Since Thursday, the shows in my recording schedule that failed to record have started disappearing. (All previously successful recordings are still on the schedule.) First, the shows from Wednesday that did not record, then all of Thursday’s shows, and now Friday’s schedule is blank as well. Looking at future days, there is a mix of scheduled recordings that look normal and recordings with a yellow warning that have no indication as to why. Probably about 50/50 in terms of shows displaying a warning symbol.

Additionally, I cannot tune any channels with Live TV. I did not try to tune Live TV on Wednesday night or Thursday, but the client has displayed an error all day today (Friday) regardless of what I try on the client side. (Client is Fire TV.)

The odd part is that the problem on Wednesday (11/29) started with a recording that began at 18:00, but there is no error for that show in the log file. The log file simply states that Plex decided to stop the recording almost as soon as it started. The UI indicates that the show recorded successfully (100%), but then displays a failure for the next show on the list that was scheduled to begin at 19:00. After that failed recording in the UI is where the schedule starts to get wiped.

I did not try restarting the server so that it could continue to log debug messages. I can still watch any kind of recorded video without issues. I will probably try restarting the server after posting this to see what happens. Attaching the log files since Wednesday afternoon.

@hamptonferraros Couple of things I would suggest.

  1. Update to 1.10.0.4523 that was released this week. There have been some updates regarding recording issues with the 1.10.0 releases. When you update I would suggest ensuring the new feature for commercial removal is turned off unless you want to start using this feature.

  2. Post a new set of logs if/when this error occurs again. When posting a full set of logs would be nice. You can download a zip file by going to Settings/Server/Help and clicking the download logs link.

  3. Screenshots of what you are referring to with the 50/50 recording issue in paragraph 2 with the yellow triangles.

@johnm_ColaSC
I may try upgrading tomorrow. Says that I’m up-to-date with 1.9 so I’m assuming that 1.10 is on the Beta channel?

Screenshots and logs attached.

Also, restarted Plex server and can now watch Live TV again.

Upgraded to 1.10. Warnings have disappeared from the recording schedule UI. We’ll see what happens.

Also updated firmware on the HDHR Connect.

I have 1.10 and I have noticed with one of my shows, (Dr. Phil for the wifey, and don’t care that much about), will do the same thing, check the day before and it is in the recording schedule, and then the day of, but after it was to air, the show is gone from the schedule and did not record. I think what is happening is that the EPG data that comes in for the show is sometimes flawed, and CBS itself is the problem. I think that sometime before the show is to air, the EPG updates, and the name is changed, and Plex no longer believes it is a “New” episode, and thus decides not to record it. However CBS does a few other things that are strange, for one, it has two audio traks, both are english, one is labeled Espanol and is in 5.1 but is actually English 5.1 and I noticed the the other track is 2.0, but commercials have no audio on this track, and it is labeled English, and is indeed English 2.0. In the case of CBS, I think the problem is the channel itself. I have Comcast out of Chicago for reference.

Just to add to this, I have had a couple of recordings look set to go, then disappear from the schedule without recording. Right now, I don’t have any more information (I only noticed a few days after they were scheduled to happen). This was UK (BBC).

One was a series, with ‘new only’ selected, the other was a single episode (so can’t select new or repeat). I had ‘no partial airings for both’ - but there was nothing that coincided, plus the recording didn’t fail it just didn’t happen. The schedules are still in my list so for the series one, I have changed to say ‘new or repeat’ and its found a couple of repeats that it will try and record (so the EPG might be OK).

I’ll keep an eye on it, so hopefully if it happens again, I can get the logs.

I have had it before, but put that down to the same name as something already recorded (for example, ‘hound of the baskervilles’ - different years). This time, there wasn’t anything with the same name, it just disappeared from the schedule and didn’t record.

In the meantime, I suggest its a ‘thing’ …

I am running up to date (currently on Version 1.10.1.4561, but at the time it would have been the earlier version). OS-X.

If you guys can do a screen shot the day before and then at the end of the day. This should clearly show what’s missing. Then post these two pics with your ZIP log files and we can forward them to the devs to get this fixed or find out what’s going on.

Interesting - I think the error has changed since the update (on Version 1.10.1.4561) when I try and record BBC channels, I get a ‘transcoder’ error. The recording just fails (although it remains in the schedule). I have done a re-install of the app and its is persistent. I have had other channels recording fine (BBC is HD, I’ll do some tests to see if it is HD or BBC that kicks this off).

I’ve attached the changed log files (no point getting everything, these are the only two which changed around the time).

It appears I can’t record anything right now…

This update seems to have messed with a lot of the timers - I keep getting ‘page not responding’ or such like. Nothing else on the system has changed, but I think plex is dropping things.

Interesting my TV Butler system sits in ‘device not found’ status when not recording. This is normally fine - but in this update, I think it is affecting the start up of the recording. Attached is a screenshot of my server status page for the device.

As I type this - its in the correct enabled state

Just as an extra - speaking about the time outs / general slowdown I’m experiencing in Version 1.10.1.4561, I have attached a couple of screenshots. one is the initial connection (i.e. when I open the plex web app) and the other is when I open up a channel.

A refresh (sometimes multiple) seems to work. My internet connection and local network are working fine (the server is wired). No changes to the underlying OS.

Server log sees a lot of eg;

Dec 11, 2017 13:40:47.909 [0x70000bcb1000] WARN - SLOW QUERY: It took 220.000000 ms to retrieve 27 items.

But nothing untoward aside from that. Still not sure if this is connected to the missing schedule items - but I can’t investigate that until this one is solved
