Plex DVR not recording shows

Having some trouble with Plex recording shows that air more than once a day - specifically Jeopardy. I’ve got it set to record all shows and to record both new and re-runs. Jeopardy (Daytime Jeopardy) comes on here at 11AM and the new season comes on at 6PM. In the guide it’s showing that it will record both of them, but in the recording tab it’s only recording the 6PM show. It’s also not actually recording the early show. Not sure what’s going on here to cause this. I have tried removing and re-adding the recording, but it’s not picking up the show.

I’ve attached screenshots to show what I am seeing, but I am not even sure where to go from here. I appreciate any help / suggestions!

Guide display of recording is only to show that there is a recording scheduled, not that it will actually record a specific airing. You will need to look at your Plex Media Server log file to determine why a specific recording is not being made. Perhaps the Season/Episode already exists in the library so Plex is not recording it.

I’m also having this problem, but only one of my shows is working. I also tried setting up a new show to record that I never recorded before, American Dad, which has plenty of episodes being aired everyday. When I set it up, the guide shows that all the episodes are going to be recorded, but when I go to the recording schedule, it doesn’t show up there, and it doesn’t record. This just started to happen about a month ago, prior to that, the dvr worked fine. Is Plex even looking into this?

If the Recording Schedule does not show the recording then your logs will need to be looked at to determine why that show is not recording. There can be many reasons for a show not recording:

  • You specified HD only and the show information in the EPG does not indicate the airing is HD.
  • You specified a specific channel to record the show from and the airings are on a different channel.
  • You specified a specific time block to record and the airings are in a different time.
  • The episode airing is already found in your library.

The logs will tell you exactly why a specific airing is not setup to record.

It was that I had set it to HD only. How do I fix this?

Click on the recording, click Modify Recording, click Show Advanced, change the Resolution option to Any and then click Save.

But I only want HD to record. Will it automatically record the HD channel? This was working in the past…

If the episode is not identified in the EPG as HD then the show won’t record, that is the problem with specifying the HD only option. Some of the newscasts in my area are not identified as HD even though they are broadcast in HD. Both of the news items below are broadcast in HD but only the bottom one is identified in the EPG as HD. So if I setup a recording for the WIS News 10 Sunrise and specify HD Only I will never get the morning news recorded.

Well I’ll use one show for example which was working fine a month ago. I record The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. My HD channel is labeled as HD in the EPG, and the show title is the same as the recording I setup. It is not making any sense why HD only wouldn’t work. So for this one, I had to specify the HD channel to record from. But for other shows I want to record are on multiple channels, but now I have to choose one channel, rather than having it record HD only from multiple channels. Nothing has changed on my end except for the Plex updates. Something else must be going on rather than it being some setting. Again, my EPG does show the channels as HD, but it seems like Plex is not reading it that way.

My channel is also identified in the guide with the HD indicator in the logo. However, Plex is not looking at the channel when establishing recordings, it is looking at the EPG data for each show. If the EPG data does not identify that it is a HD airing and you have specified HD Only then Plex will not record that show. As you can see in the image below channel 10.1 says NBC HD in the logo. For the 3 shows displayed in the guide currently for that channel: Today With Kathie Lee & Hoda and Live with Kelly and Ryan are both marked as HD but the WIS News 10 at Noon is marked as SD.

I setup 2 recordings to record Only HD, one for the Live with Kelly and Ryan the other for the WIS News 10 at Noon. Below are the log entries for the recordings being set up for each show:

As far as I can tell Plex is doing exactly what it should, ignoring shows that are not identified as HD in the EPG data for the show.

I upgraded to Version 1.13.8.5395 yesterday. Since then, Plex DVR has not recorded any instances of “The Daily Show” at 11:00 PM EDT.

My symptoms were similar to that of the original post.

I went into the Recording Options for the show, and changed resolution from “HD” to “Any”. After that change was applied, the new episodes of “The Daily Show” are now appearing in the Calendar view.

My previous configuration was probably overkill, as I had selected to record HD only resolution, and limited recordings to just the HD station.

My issue is now resolved, but I think it is worth noting that this behavior is a change from previous versions.

I may be reading your logs wrong, but it looks like it is set to record Live with Kathie Lee and you set it to HD only and the logs are not ignoring it?

That’s where I’m having the problem, Plex is ignoring the the HD channel. How can I check if my EPG is labeling the channel properly as HD?

Again, this setting worked perfectly fine for a long time until about a month ago after a Plex update. I should at least be able to fix my EPG right? Or will my DVR be limited like this for now on?

Having a similar issue with the latest version, 1.13.8.5395. New shows that should record will disappear from recordings after 12pm on the day the show should record. I can add them manually via the guide, but some still disappear even after I select individual episodes to record. Just clicked Record for “Simple Little Things”. When I check the recordings, it no longer appears. The other recordings had to be manually added as they disappeared today.

Would it be possible to have the setting record based on what channels are HD? My current workaround is to limit recording only to the HD channel, but that excludes reruns that show on another network. I guess I could go through and disable SD channels on the hdhomerun itself but that is a lot of clicking.

What do the Plex Media Server log files say about the recording?

I’m not sure what my logs are saying because I don’t know how to read through them or which file I’m suppose to look at. I’m just going to hope this gets fixed in future updates, it was really nice when it was working.

Settings / Server / Help / Click the Download Logs link. Drag/Drop the zip file downloaded to your computer into a new post. Would also be nice if you could go to the Guide, click on a show that is not set to record, click on the episode and post a screenshot of the episode details as I have shown in my posts earlier.

I’m having the same problem. ( Version 1.13.8.5395)
After missing all my morning recordings, I deleted ALL my recordings and added them in one by one. The recording screen, this morning, showed them all. But now, the evening shows have all disappeared. I had to add them in manually for today. They’re still showing on the recording tab for tomorrow.
