DVR No Longer Recording

Since October 1st, Plex DVR has stopped recording shows. And I am not sure why. It has been working well for months, and to have it fail for no reason or warning as shows are starting up again is frustrating. Anyone else having this issue or have any ideas on a fix?

This actually just happened to me, all the shows were int he schedule but nothing was recorded. I didn’t catch it until today and nothing was recorded since Sunday. I might make my own thread since I don’t know if it’s the same issue as yours, but I’m attaching my logs just in case.

Rebooting my PC seemed to have fixed it and it’s now recording again. I’m finding Plex DVR really unreliable, which is VERY frustrating. DVRs have be to reliable.

My DVR is also really unreliable. New shows of my own start this week but I noticed nothing has been added/recorded in 8 days. Items in the schedule say something like “100% Recording” or similar.

I’m running ubuntu, may go back to Windows and see if I have better luck.

I have a similar problem wherein only shows set up to record before the versions since 1.8 seem to record, new shows that I have set up to record since the manual server upgrade to 1.9x are not recording and I am running the server on a Mac Mini. I reported this with logs in another thread, but so far no joy in a solution.

@the_writing_critic from your screenshots I can’t tell much. Perhaps a server reboot. If this happens again logs immediately after it happening would be good.

@mdgalen Since you have already rebooted if it happens again you may want to start a new thread and post a new set of logs.

@Faithfactor619 if you were seeing a bunch of shows that all said 100% recording you were probably seeing an issue that has been reported quite a bit on the forums. A fix is being worked on, I know they were looking for Mac users that could test out a patch for the 100% issue. So once some additional testing is done we should see it released in a new server version. No ETA has been announced since the are still in the initial testing.

@toxlab Is this the thread you mention you posted logs?

If so, in that thread you posted a partial snips of the log not the full logs. Full logs would be nice so we can search through them looking for any other messages about why the recording did not happen. All I could tell from the snips you included was there was supposed to be a recording at 19:30 that night but nothing about what happened to the recording, just a message about the next thing scheduled to record.

When submitting logs it would also be nice to include information about the show you are having an issue with, including when it was supposed to start/end. The logs also need to be grabbed as soon after the incident as possible. If not grabbed soon enough the information about what happened may have already been overwritten by newer log entries. I and the other Plex Ninjas don’t mind looking at logs to try to help out but also don’t want to try to analyze all of the logs trying to figure out what issue you might be having. So helping us by narrowing down the times we should be focusing on is appreciated. All of the Ninja’s are other users doing this on our own time to try to help other users out, we all also have our own jobs, family, etc. so any assistance you can give us in helping you is greatly appreciated.

Same issue here. I was running into many DVR issues with stability (lock ups, DVR scheduling issues, 100% completion problem mentioned above) of the Plex Server on my QNAP TS-659, so I ported over DVR recording tasks to my mac mini. Well, this week has really shown Plex to be a complete PoS! Sorry, but I don’t consider having one out of every three scheduled programs successfully recorded anywhere close to something that could be considered reliable or ever released. Not sure how this crap ever made it out of testing!!

Over the past two nights alone, Plex has only recorded 4 of 12 programs!!! Including Sunday, it has been 6 of 16. That’s good for baseball, but terrible when you’ve got a wife clamoring for us to go back to cable, which even though it has an awful interface will at least reliably record a freakin’ program. What a complete joke this is. On Tuesday, I had Plex transcoding the recordings live to see if that was any better. It wasn’t, so I set Plex to just record the native TS tonight. Same results!!! Guess I’ll go back to the QNAP. At least that was probably closer to an 80% success rate.

While I’m in a ranting mood, how come Plex’s live tv streaming is so much worse than the default HDHomeRun app on FireTV? Same tuner, same FireTV playback device, but the HDHomeRun native app streams with zero issues, while Plex constantly wants to buffer or claim my connection isn’t good enough.

Also, watching live sports from a 1080i channel on a device like the FireTV is horrid. It’s the same experience in the Plex app (on the few occasions where I don’t end up having buffering issues) that it is in HDHomeRun, but if I am going to use a Plex Server, then I should be allowed to do some live transcoding to enable a better deinterlace. As it stands, both Plex and HDHomeRun don’t do much to help with the interlace to progressive display conversion (which I do understand is an issue with the FireTV not having a built-in deinterlacer available). But there should be an option in the Plex server/player to enable server-side deinterlace capabilites. So instead of having to watch 1080i sports with blended fields, it could be watched in either 720p60 or 1080p60. This should be basic stuff for anyone who has experienced this within the Plex team during testing and enabling of the Live TV feature for FireTV.

Anyway, logs attached. Sorry if the last two paragraphs were slightly off topic. If there’s some magic beta or other build that can increase reliability past even the 50% mark, I’d be open to installing it – can’t get any worse!!!

@johnm_ColaSC The logs posted were from before the reboot, should have been clearer. But I agree with you, if it happens again I’ll post a new thread with both sets of logs

I have the same issue

@johnm_ColaSC The screenshots show that there is nothing during those 10 days. Absolutely nothing. Usually, when the shows don’t record, the airing is still listed, but there is no button to play (at least it used to be like that). If it happens again, I will post logs.

Thanks for the reply. I will post the full log in that thread (although there was not much more before that time i took out of the log) and any other info I can add about when it happens. I am going to let it try to record the two shows that I had added to record after all the rest had been set up before when I was using 1.8X PMS. The two shows were Bull and Milk Street (PBS), which have not recorded, but show recorded with no play button.

Glad I ran into this thread. I’ve been having similar issues, but in my case it seems to be recording only the new episodes, even though I have it set to record all episodes.

i’m running a HDHomeRun and i have to launch the HDHomeRun video player to get it recording. After that the HDHomeRun is recognized by plex and records fin until the next update is installed.

I also have the same issue and trying the suggestions here to see if they work. I am using Ubuntu 64-bit Plex (PlexPass version) and the HDHomeRun Extend tuner. My fiance would like a show recorded and it worked twice, then I updated to the latest Plex version and now it is saying recorded successfully but it is not on the system to playback. I checked the Hard drive and it isn’t there. When it tried to record on Wednesday, it actually deleted the episode I had successfully recorded on Tuesday.
So far today I have deleted the scheduled recording and re-added it and rebooted the server. I also did the suggestion of starting up the HDHomeRun player as well. If it doesn’t record again at 4pm and 4:30pm, I’ll go ahead and post the logs.
One Note, in my screen shot, Super Store recorded properly but I deleted it after watching it. All the rest say they recorded but either deleted right away or never actually recorded.

Still not recording. It looks like it is going through the recording process.

Trying to record Judge Judy at 4:00 and 4:30.

Edit:: 5:36PM
Looking through the logs (Plex Media Server.1.log), I am seeing where it deleted due to being over 7 days old when I have it set to retain all episodes. The old scheduled recording profile had it to only 7 days but I deleted it.

Garbage Collector: Deleting episode 175 - Don't Be a Selfish Parent!; Paint Job or Scam Job? (beyond window of 7 days old)

Here are my logs.

Thanks for any help in advance.

@flynn2k Since you found the garbage collection message I don’t even need to check the logs. You have the show setup to only keep episodes that are 7 days old. Plex uses the episodes original air date when determining if a show is older than 7 days. S21 E175 originally aired on 05/24/2017 so is more than 7 days old.

You can review the recording settings options in the Plex Support pages: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/226074728-Setting-Up-Recordings

@johnm_ColaSC Thanks for the reply but I think I have it set right in the Recording Settings and that is why I am so confused. I originally had it set to keep the last week’s of episodes and then changed it to keep all but it does seem to work. If there is another place to make the setting other then on the Series Recording Manager and in Advanced, I haven’t been able to find it yet.

Thanks again.

You have it set correctly in the Recording Settings but Garbage Collector uses the settings for the Show in the Library. Go to your Library, Click on the show, and click the Edit link.

Same problem here I am trying to find a consistent log message I can write a script to watch for to restart this silly creature I can’t babysit it and it fries live TV to devices too

I’ve used HDhomerunviewer 2 for years and I’m in a goofy way on that after plex server 1.5 and use chromecast all the time. I thought the native support worked great if not better and didnt have the channel inconsistency issues I have with 1.5 but I don’t run it because well, I need hdhrviewer for live tv and its all stuttery under anything above 1.5.

I took the upgrade because finally half work with one hdhrviewer 2 config half work with another. I started playing with DVR and man I love the UI and am finding content I wouldn’t have otherwise found so I’m scheduling stuff thinking about buying more tuners but this just isn’t stable.

My logs roll over so fast I can’t catch the window to trap. I can’t produce consistent errors to key off of when I can produce errors. Its maddening I might go back to 1.5 again and wait.
