SD quality shows stutter/low framerate on Android TV App

I have noticed if I change the streaming bandwidth to 2mbps, the stuttering goes away and the fps go up but the quality of course goes down

In case anyone is having the same issues as me with dropped frames…

Sony Bravia 49xe8396, Android 7

Uninstalled Plex, turned off auto update in google play store, downloaded 6.12 from release forums link, manually installed, dropped frames issue gone. For reference, I tried 6.13 and it appears that is the version where things went wrong. 6.15 still has the same problem for me.

Still not fixed… :frowning:

nope… checking here everyday

Just to throw my hat in the ring, I’m getting exact same issues as described here by others - Sony Bravia Android tv with the Plex app.

Everything was fine until recently, it now skips frames roughly every 2-3 seconds on nearly every video and it’s very noticeable. Like macgyverc3 I discovered lowering the bandwidth makes the issue disappear but it’s not really a solution as quality suffers greatly. I have two other tvs in the house which run Plex off an Amazon Fire stick and they work fine without issues.

It’s a shame as it’s really putting me off using Plex on our main tv at the moment.

Search the forums for sideload and 6.12 and that will solve your problems until the devs resolve it in the current versions.

Ok thanks rwoffice, I’ll check it out.

Hi guys, I have a Mi Box running Plex 6.17 and I also notice this stutter for every movie that I watch. Some frames seem to be dropped at every 3 seconds… very subtle but noticeable. It seems that was not fixed yet :frowning:

I decided to get a Shield instead since it doesn’t seem like they have any intention of fixing it. That one plays MPEG-4 without issues

Really disappointed that this has been ignored, as you said. My whole reasoning for buying an Android TV was based on finding a TV which worked well with Plex built in and would be looked after in the future, unlike TV specific apps which seem to have been ignored in many cases too :frowning: Especially irritating after it had worked well for a period up to 6.12, although even that had little issues with some HD content

Seeing as the app doesn’t seem to be inline for a fix anytime soon, I thought I’d put the options I’ve tried in case it helps anyone else on Android tv:

Plex Android app: downgraded to 6.12 version and turned off auto updates. On a Sony Bravia, I found the cinema pro mode fixed minor hd stuttering issues, and this version plays nicely with SD, no dropped frames. Downside, can’t update for any new features, have to manually update other Android apps.

XPlay for Android: very good playback of SD and hd files, no dropped frames issues. Downside, still in development, major issue with anamorphic video files on Sony Bravia, everything is stretched to 16:9 regardless of ratio. Missing a few Plex features, such as trailers etc. Looks to be a promising option in the future.

Kodi app with Plex plugin: clean and user friendly ui. Dropped frame issue resolved, can set Kodi to auto start Plex app so you go in directly. Downside is that it struggles very badly on large HD files, with massive buffering issues, caused it would seem by plugin overheads. Advanced settings install has no difference on issue, and isn’t a network problem. Doesn’t appear to be updated very often.

Kodi app with PlexKodiConnect: very flexible, no playback issues at all from use so far. SD, hd and big hd files all playback fine. Massive flexibility of interface due to Kodi and Titan skin, with pretty much every Plex feature included, including trailers etc. Downside is that it needs a bit of work to setup initially, not quite plug and play but incredibly flexible to style and setup your libraries how you want. Apparantely, music can be a problem though.

I am also very disappointed this has gone on this long but for me the best fix i have is to have plex make optimized versions of the videos with issues. This fixed it for me…

Has anybody had any luck with the new 7 versions?

This went away for me when I turned off ā€œPlay Smaller Videos at Original Qualityā€

Just tried, same issue :frowning:

I have the same issue with a Hisense Android TV. Changing quality helps a bit but doesn’t resolve the issue.

Is there still no fix for this??? Version 7.4.0.6424.

The whole issue would be solved for me if there was a way, like in roku and other apps, to turn off direct play and direct stream and auto force transcode regardless of file. Playback issues on LG we’re resolved with these turned off. Force transcoding works on android, but invaraiably means having to choose a lower setting and worse picture and also the hassle of doing something that should be automatic

Just got a new Sony Bravia x800e and I’m having the same issues described here. Has there been any update? Can anyone offer advice? The Plex app for Android TV stutters while I get perfect playback using my Roku. Happy to hear any suggestions.

I just discovered the issue today, and I’m running 7.9.0.8439. I’m really disappointed that this hasn’t been fixed in almost a year, considering there have been several updates to the app in that time.

Using the current firetv app, if I pause a movie exhibiting this, select the ā€œgearā€ and then ā€œconvert automaticallyā€ the issue goes away for me. My plex server starts to transcode, and there’s minimal quality loss, at least that I can see. Still annoying but at least I don’t get a headache.
