Search for an actor

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9685
Player Version#: 2025.13.0 (1025)

Searching for an actor is just unusable. I tried searching for an actor and it did bring up an auto-complete option for an actor and when I tap the actors name it brings me to a library view of a library that isn’t selected. It’s super strange.

I have two movie libraries. “Movies” and “Childrens”. I was in the Movies library when I start to search and it showed me children’s once I tapped the actor’s search result. The library at the top was still “Movies” though.

Just wild stuff.

What agents are you using for those libraries and in either is “Allow matching to explicit content” (allow adult content), enabled in either?

If not using the Plex Movie agent or have that setting enabled it will not show actor pages and will filter library instead.

Both libraries use the Plex Movie agent

Neither have the allow matching to explicit content box checked

Other clients search fine (Roku, for example).

Can you show me a screenshot of what the search results looked like ( before you clicked on the result) Did it say “Actor, maybe something else” under their name or did it show the name of the server?

I think i may have misunderstood this part. so the movies that it displays after clicking is the movies from the children’s library? and by “library at the top” you mean the menu on the top left?

Did the search result show a “Servername + 1” under their name?

Yes it does say “servername +2” under the result. Can I DM you some photos of the 3 screens. Start - Search - End?

sure. I will reply here though not the DM

Yeah, that’s not a problem, DM sent.

Thanks for screenshots. I think I just reproduced it actually. same actor in tv and movie libraries. I knew movies was going to be the primary result so started search with TV library open and I see what you mean. TV library was in menu on top left but it was showing me movies.

Also wanted to confirm. The movies it displays from movie library are not even necessarily one that actor is in? meaning is not not filtering

Oh yes, good question. And you’re correct, it shows an unfiltered view of the Children’s library (even though I started on the Movies library) after tapping on the Actor.

In the latest beta version 2025.17.0 (1079) this is fixed.

I will admit that the search interface is a little strange. Tapping on a search result for an actor defaults to a library with that actor. Seems it chooses the library first in the list alphabetically. I expected to see all results and not have to tap on the server name to choose a library. Seems an unnecessary step.

There seems to be a new issue now in 2025.21.0. Searching for an actor shows the actor and then when you tap that actor to see the movies they are in it only shows results for one library and it’s not the library I ahe selected.

I’m not clear if you are just clicking on the actor block or clicking on the “server +X” then clicking on the library in the popup of list of libraries.

Honestly I keep forgetting you can even tap on the “server+X” link. So I’m not clicking that.

Starting from the home screen

  1. Tap search
  2. Enter actor name: Brendan Frazier (Note that “All” is highlighted across the top)
  3. tap actor block
  4. Only see 2 results from my “Children’s library” but nothing from my main movies library.

Children’s is the first library in my list of libraries alphabetically, and so I’m thinking that’s why it’s the one it chooses??

If I do tap “server+X” and click my movies library that works and shows results from that library. I expect to see results from ALL libraries when I tap the actor block though. Maybe that expectation isn’t what is intended. Having to click the “server+X” is just super not-intuitive. A subjective opinion

Ok, so re-reading an older reply, it’s clear that the experience is the same as it was in version 2025.17.0, but I hadn’t used it in a couple months and forgot what we went through.

So I think my feedback is that if I click on the actor block and see results from one library and can’t easily navigate to the other libraries, what is the point of that?

Having to click on the “server+X” is like a hidden feature.

I’ll pass the feedback along.

I am curious why you don’t use the “More Ways to watch” in search settings which will allow you to see an actor page with everything from all libraries you have access on one screen. (It’s fine that you don’t, but I know devs/UX designers will ask)

Maybe I would, but I literally can’t find the phrase “More Ways to watch” anywhere in the app in iOS. I have removed all the Plex content where ever possible, so maybe that removed that option??

Yeah if you disabled it in the Online Media Source account settings then it won’t show up in search setting options.
