I populate, among others, the Actor metadata field of all the mp4s I create. Plex does not appear to search these fields. Is there a setting I’m missing to enable this behavior?

I’ve just double-checked and it’s working for me.
That being said… I’ve only got mp4 files with embedded metadata in a personal videos library (w/ local media assets enabled in the agent settings).
In a movie library you might need to tell that library to use embedded metadata – in that case the sequence of your agents might be critical as by default the online data source (such as The Movie Database) should be prioritized over your embedded metadata (unless you change that priority in the agent settings).
Generally speaking, I’ve had no issues finding movies based on actors using search (mostly based on movies / tv shows matched to an online source.
That’s the agent configuration and how to prioritize certain data sources used by the agent.
Your screenshot shows that the agent “Personal Media” also considering Local Media Assets (Movies).
Should I drag Personal Media to the top on each of those lists? What does Local Media Assets mean?
Your settings are ok.
What agent are you actually using for the library for which search doesn’t show the results based on your embedded metadata? Is this actually an Other Videos kind of library or a Movies library?
This is a Movies library. Though I also have a lot of television shows (in the TV Shows library) that I would like to behave the same way when searched.
Is this where the search agent is selected? I don’t see any options that closely match those on the Agents screen we looked at.
