Embedding metadata in MP4 personal media video files

I’m trying to figure out how to embed metadata information into my personal video files. In researching I came across this post:

and am wondering if the information outlined is still valid or if Plex has changed how it consumes the metadata tags. With the exception of GENRE, none of the other recommended metadata fields (DESCRIPTION, PODCASTDESC, ALBUM) work as described. File naming convention for Title works just fine.

I’m trying to figure out an effective way to persist metadata, preferably within the file though not a requirement. Just a consistent mechanism for Plex to consume in case I need to rebuild the server.

My current set up is:

  • Synology DS1520+
  • Docker
  • PlexPass, latest release

Are others still able to successfully include metadata through the method described? Perhaps it is something with my configuration…

What kind of library is it?
Which agent was selected for the library?
Did you tell Plex to 1) use & 2) prefer embedded metadata?

Library Type: TV Show
Scanner: Plex Series Scanner
Agent: Personal Media Shows

Based on these settings the option for “Prefer Embedded Metadata” is not available. Should I be using different settings for the field listed above?

You will need to set the necessary option in a different place:
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - Personal Media Shows
Make sure the line “Local Media Assets” has a checkmark and is positioned above the line “Personal Media Shows”.

Be advised that these are the old, deprecated agents.
They will go away in a future Plex server release. It is also highly unlikely that they’ll receive any bugfixes.

I left all Library settings as previously described. In the Agents section, “Local Media Assets” was checked but I had to move it above “Personal Media Shows” so will test things out.

To your comment on the deprecated agents, generally speaking are there plans to capture personal media metadata through another mechanism? Or what is the disposition toward this type of capability?

I described agent settings to you. For the old agents, these are global. You won’t find them in the properties of the libraries.

Yes, I wasn’t clear in my explanation. I made the Agent changes you described under Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - Personal Media Shows but, did not make any changes to my Library settings:

**Library Type** : TV Show
**Scanner** : Plex Series Scanner
**Agent** : Personal Media Shows

My intent was to be explicit in that the ONLY changes I made were the ones you recommended but I explained it poorly.

Unfortunately the changes to the Agent settings did not change anything for me. Subsequently I tried creating a new library with different settings:

Library Type : TV Show
Scanner : Plex TV Series
Agent : Plex TV Series
Prefer local metadata: checked

but it did not resolve the issue either. In fact, it no longer picked up the GENRE tag either.
