I hope i put this in the right category but my “issue” basically is that I am trying to avoid any form of transcoding.
Therefore I own both a 1080p and 4K version off all my movies. When streaming I can use the “Select version” option to select which one I want.
However when downloading for offline use I do not get this option and I have to download original quality which defaults to the highest (4K) or I have to transcode to 1080p, which is completely useless since I literally have it already.
Something I did to solve this is create a separate library for 1080p and 4K but I feel like there should be an easier way. Also registering movies I have seen does not fully work this way. It still shows movies as not seen when I did see them but just in the other library. That is especially annoying when watching a TV Show in 4K on the TV and than switching to the 1080p library on my phone.
Little bonus feature would be to get a “version selection” when playing a movie or show that has multiple versions instead of hiding it in the options. Since that now defaults to the highest and has caused other users to play movies in 4K on their 1080p screens as they were not aware of this.
Not really as this is about optimized versions. I have both a 1080p and 4K copy already ready to go. And when downloading it will let you choose “original” but it counts the highest quality as original, so it picks 4K.

It’s about selecting which version to be downloaded – the only difference is the source of that optimization… while your talking about manually added files, this suggestion is addressing the same from the perspective of files created by Plex as optimized versions of an existing file.
I suppose in that case the goal would be the same. Is there any better way to solve this than what I previously described or maybe a solution I do not know about?
No, that’s pretty much why this other feature suggestion exists (same for the suggestion for an improved handling of different cuts/editions of a movie).
