Xbox One is attached to the NAS using a cable (1Gbps)
When not selectng subtitles, movies play smoothly
When selecting subtitles, it needs >15 seconds to play 2 seconds, after which it needs another 15+ seconds to play another 1 to 2 seconds. Basically, I cannot watch any movies when subtitles are selected.
I’ve tried watching a movie with subtitles a while (~2 months) ago: same issue. I’ve basically never been able to watch movies with subtitles using the above setup.
As all (NAS, Xbox and Plex) have received updates, I tried again today, but problem remains.
I couldn’t find people with simular issues on this forum, but cannot think of a ‘user error’ that can cause this.
Anyone any suggestions what might cause above issue? Anyone else has experienced this in the past?
When using embedded subtitles (as in: no seperate .srt files): are subtitles added server side (on my NAS in this case), or client-side?
When using external subtitles (as in: seperate .srt file): are subtitles added server side (on my NAS in this case), or client-side?
Reason for asking: I can imagine the NAS isn’t powerfull enough to add the subtitles for 1080p movies…
If it is done client-side, I have no clue what can cause this (e.g. playing the same movies using WiFi from my surface tablet (using media player classic) isn’t causing any issues whatsoever)
Let me qualify myself as first saying I’m still new to this.
I’ve had the same problem with my WD NAS. When I try and turn on subtitles, I get the lovely error screen.
I was told by a friend, that subtitles puts a huge load on the CPU. And most NAS’s don’t have the CPU power to do that. Something about scanning the file and burning in the subtitles while playing. Especially if transcoding is needed. My friend advised ripping the movie with subs burned in already. I dismissed that idea, as I only want it for the parts I couldn’t understand what they said.
To answer your questions in second post, it is my understanding that all is done on the server side. From what I can find, NAS aren’t all that powerful.
You’d be better off with an older powerhouse computer as server, than a new NAS. I just got a 2008 dual 3.0 quad-core Mac Pro, and migrating to that. Waiting on new hard drives. So far in testing the new CPU, it’s transcoding stuff much better. Haven’t tried subtitles yet. That’s the next test.
Now that I’m awake, Ive headed into the living room, and booted the xbox. Watching “Gravity” with subtitles! Something I couldn’t do with the NAS. Looking at the activity monitor on the tower mac, with subtitles on, I peak about 200% of CPU (which is 1/2 a quad core I believe). With subtitles off, it’s barely tickling the CPU. 1.5% or so. Looks like your NAS is a dual 2GHz processor. So if it’s taking 2 cores of 3.0GHz processor on my machine to do subtitles, that might explain why your NAS starts to do it, hiccups, and fails.

Thx omnisaudis
I’ve marked your response as ‘answered’, but would like a confirmation of someone else as well.
Yes, transcoding is CPU/GPU intense, and a NAS by default cannot do this (there are however ~€500,- NAS devices nowadays who do claim to be able to transcode 1080p movies).
And yes, it seems all happens server-side, which explains the buffering.
However…
When reading the FAQ , Q21 states that to solve the problem (of subtitles not being displayed), you can:
Use more powerfull server hardware
Use 'a device connected to your TV such as a Roku, Raspberry Pi 2 with RasPlex, Apple TV ’
An Xbox One is very powerfull (from graphics perspective) and directly attached to the TV (more or less: there is a receiver in between for the sound ).
Hence: I was hoping the Plex client on the Xbox One would ‘overlay’ the subtitle
Again, your answer is likely correct (therefore marked as answered), but as you mention you’re new to Plex as well and Q21 in the FAQ confuses me, I hope someone else can confirm our thoughts.

That is a feature that is on the developer road map for the xbox one but has not been implemented yet. It wasn’t until a few Xbox One system updates ago that soft subtitles were available for the built in media player. That type of functionality is typically necessary before the App is able to take advantage of it.
