Transcoding or not transcoding ??

Dear all

I’m a new Plex user since a few days and I’m planning to buy a NAS soon.
And the main device I’m using to read my Plex content is my Xbox One.
To be able to know which NAS I need I have seen that you need to know if you are going to need the transcoding or not …
So here is my question … Is the XBOX One capable of direct stream via Plex for MKV movies in 720 but also 1080p ? And what about the srt subtitles ?
If yes then I dont espcially a NAS capable of 720/1080 transcoding and in this case pretty much any Nas will do the job …? No ?

Can you confirm me this please ?
Also if you can suggest me a NAS …? I wanted to buy the new DS216play but it’s not PLEX compatible yet ( or not officially at least )

No, the Xbox One app currently does not support Soft Subtitles. So until that support is added the server will have to transcode subtitles if you want them.

Yes the Xbox One supports MKV’s, however depending on what audio and video codecs you have in that container it may still require transcoding.

Thanks for the quick answer…
All of my MKV are in 720 or 1080p and in H264 and not in DTS wich I think is not supported yet…
So the only thing that needs transcoding would be for the subtitles …?
Are you sure because I think I ve read somewhere that srt subtiltes were natively supported …?
But even if a transcoding is needed because of the subtitles … is it going to need much power just to do that ? Are any NAs will be able to do it anyway ?
it’s not like it has to convert full 1080P to mp4 it’s just adding some subtitles

Can you give me 1 or 2 NAS that are working 100% to do this task ?

Thanks again

Soft Subtitles currently are not supported by the Xbox One App. It is something the developers are working on, but there has been no ETA on when this is expected to be released.

Transcoding subtitles is basically a full transcode on whatever the video resolution is. It takes the video stream and combines it with the subtitle stream creating 1 new video stream. So with subtitles enabled most NAS’s will not have the power to do full 1080p transcoding.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any NAS’s and I don’t know them very well at all. However this list shows 100 NAS’s from the 3 main brands: ASUSTOR, ReadyNAS, and Synology (There are others but since I don’t follow them too much I don’t know how they would perform):
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201373803-NAS-Compatibility-List

The biggest decision will be whether or not you need subtitles now or can wait for soft subtitles. Once soft subtitles are included in the app then the amount of processing power required will drop immensely.

Ok thanks …
That’s not a good news for me then

I need subtitiles because I’m watching all my movies - series in Original version in English but I’m seapking French so I need to add the .srt in french.

I’m using it in this way for the moment and it’s working fine but the Plex server is installed for the moment on my Imac so I guess the transcoding is not an issue…but it will be if I get a NAS …

Almost no NAS are really powerfull enought to do full 1080 transcoding but I dont want to user my Imac as a server … it’s not always on …

Reason I want a NAS is to have all my data available at the same location and to be reachable from anywhere …

I really dont know what i’m going to do then … :frowning:

When you say this : Soft Subtitles currently are not supported by the Xbox One App

Do you mean not supported by the PLEX Xbox one App …? or by the media player App of the xbox one itself ?
Because I know the xbox one even if supporting MKV is not supporting SRT yet …
I was hoping Plex to be an answer but if it is the fact that Microsoft doesnt allow srt that cause that PLEX is also no possibe to do it … It’s not much better… :frowning:

transcoding it the solution but full transcoding in 1080 is almost not possible on a NAS … :frowning:

Soft Subtitles mean that the subtitle stream can be sent as it’s own stream and not have to be transcoded into the video stream, so I am referring to the Xbox One Plex App. (I have absolutely no idea what Microsoft plans to do if anything with the Media Player app)

But because the developers don’t give out time lines, we don’t know when this feature will make it to the Plex app. As far as I know the server side has been prepared for this feature and it’s just a matter of getting the support into the various apps. But I don’t know if it is something that can be quickly added or if it is something that would require additional support from Microsoft.

Thanks for the answer ! I hope asap then …
Or to find a NAS capable of doing the transcoding to the xbox one
