+1 yes… with 30+ folks using mine regularly, i need to be able to tell them about planned down time (have to patch the SAN and VM at some point…)
We do realy need a maintenance mode with full shutdown, except for users of an exclusion list.
Yesterday I had to move a library section of 5TB from one NAS to another. During the copy operation users accessed PMS and slowed the copy operation down. The contant transfer rate went from 100mb/s down to like 40mb/s.
Instead of turning off external access, I would like PMS to notify clients (with a custom text of course) during the connect that it is maintenance mode and display nothing else. On the other hand there should be a list of excluded users, that do receive the same notification, but are still able to access libraries and media even during maintenance mode.
For time beeing i was thinking to create a special section called “READ ME” and put a single image inside that says smth like “sorry for the inconvience, but we are in maintanance mode. Access will be available again after maintenance mode.”. Then take away the permissions to access all other shares during maintenance… Terrible solution that is! Is there any better for now?
We realy do need that maintenance mode feature with a proper notification system!

Even a toast message that appears for a predetermined amount of time on the screen would be fantastic.

18 pages of requests and chat about it since 2012 and nothing materialises. This is a simple request that is easily added, surely!?
An API request for a small popup in the bottom right corner for new additions as the Fire TV does from Amazon would be simple to add too.
PlexPy is screaming out to implement an integrated popup/messaging system within Plex natively without the need for clucky work arounds using PushBullet/NotifyMyAndroid etc.
Would be even better if Plex Server just did it… Perhaps with option at the clients side to turn notifications from server off too.
The server, once something new is found and added, anyone currently veiwing gets a ‘Just added’ notification with the coverart.
Then a small page that allows a set message or even a custom one (if you see fit) to let current active users the servers going down for maintenance or the like. If it could be used during a certain period to let those k kw connecting to for a few days and once dismissed doesn’t return… Job done.
Just saying.
Come on Plex Devs. Have a look at it at least.
Amazon Fire have it, Kodi supports it… Plex has got to, too.

I figured this would have been implemented by now but seeing that it is not , I am adding my vote for this feature. I have 20 friends that share my library and at times need to advise them or have them notify me of issues via a simple popup

+1 (Clicked the like as well) The technology is already there, just needs a hair of tweeking for the instant messaging. If you stop a stream, it then gives you an option to send a message to the user you stopped. If they would simply make that option available without stopping the stream first it would be beautiful! And further inhancing it with a server message upon logging in to your server for upcoming messages would be extremely helpful for doing server reboots and moves, not to mention announcing upcoming additions to the selection.
+1 - With the ability share with other users, comes the need to let others know if something is going on, and or if you are planning something. Rather than have my cell phone blow up and have to repeat the same message to 8-10 people. We love the product, love the functionality already there and are simply asking for an admin tool so we can continue to keep subscribing!
