Great idea. This is what made me join the forum. I have wanted this several times in the past.
As a developer, I can say having it send emails would introduce more expenses for Plex by having to use a third party, as they probably already do, for managing emails so as not to make it look like spam. These services are usually based on volume. That may be why they donât have that.
However, I donât see why they canât implement a simple message to end-users to show up when they use whatever plex client app theyâre using. Itâs already supported when you go to kick someone off of viewing something currently.
Having it send out an e-mail would be a great thing! They could either do in in house and have it all sent from the same e-mail or allow the users to customize and add a 3rd party such as GMail, Outlook, Proton Mail etc to send the messages. All you need is the SMTP information.
However, that is a little advanced a simple banner or MOTD message would be great. Only really need it to warn of reboots and updates, scheduled maintenance. We donât need a very robust feature at least I donât.
Can a Plex employee add something to this? Is this a pipe dream request and a black hole for votes or something that is a work in progress?
You should be able to log into your PMS admin account and add a simple message to display when the server is down. So when it fails to connect it displays the message. You could set it too âUnexpected downtime. Text me.â or âServer is down due to big Oof. ETA is Unkown.â.
This would be a very useful feature. My HTPC plex server is also used for other tasks so it would be great if I can just message active users about why the server needs to go down for whatever reason.
I donât think the majority of Plex employees even know this forum exists. I wouldnât expect an answer anytime soon if ever.
I doubt it at least we can keep the posts going.
Please add this feature!!!.
Donât forget to add your vote at the top of the suggestion.
This would be awesome! As I alter or create new folders or even rename media files to better organize, it would be super helpful if I could notify remote users, as a group, what I had done as opposed to trying to email/text/call everyone externally.
@Plex
This request ask is over 8 Years old with over 750 votes and you guys havent done a single thing about it⊠and its a really easy feature to add too. Kodi (8 yrs https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=130494) and Emby have easy ways to send Onscreen Notifications to clients
Not a word from you, why bother having a feature request forum if you are just going to ignore the requests? Why donât you care about what your users want?
totally agreed. this thing is very simple to implement, if Iâll be the developer, I can deliver it in 1w without âBUGSâ. IDK what kind of developer and product management the plex has. I donât think theyâre listening to their clients w/c keeps the business alive.

Interesting idea, I love it
if i had to guess why this feature will never implemented, it probably has something to do with not letting server admins push advertising/marketing/self-promotion to their local & remote users. thatâs the only semi-valid reasoning i can think of given how old this request is and how simple it would be to implement considering the on-screen notification can already be pushed by the server admin if you force cancel a stream and add a message (the tech is already there).
Net runs has a valid point. But even allowing the Amin to send one or more messages from a pull down list would be useful. Joust need to be able to notify users of maintenance, reboots, etc.
Your silence speaks volumes⊠you dont care about your users, only their data. Youâve become the Facebook of media players. Congrats on being cowards by not acknowledging this request
Has anyone tried the notification features of Tautulli?
I totally agree. I share my server with a few close friends and I have to bother them via phone or my social media to let them know the server will be down if they are not already using the app, and it comes off rude to my having to kick someone off for maintenance while he/she is watching their favorite movie or show without warning.
If there is a messaging system, it should be up to the admin to choose between only one-way messaging or two-way messaging. One Way messaging is great for saying server will be down for maintainence, etc., while two-way messaging would be a plus for managed users to report issues, and even to submit content requests.
All in all, if messaging is included in the next update, it should have admin only features, like blocking users who take advantage and spam the messaging system, etc.
