I have copied several artist album compilations to my hard drive. When I create separate album titles in Plex, my hard work goes back to one compilation. This has happened to Otis Redding Album collection and Rolling Stones in Mono, for instance. How can my work go unchanged?

You mean you ripped those albums and organized them on your hard drive.
If so… how have you organized them (folder structure, file naming)?
What do you see in Plex vs. what do you expect to see?
I see the entire box set as a compilation in Plex. I have edited the compilation into separate albums. I add cover art. I can see each individual album under Albums in Plex. So far so good. However, days later all my work reverts back to the entire box set as a compilation in Plex.
What happens if you unmatch the album?
My guess is this: Plex attempts to match albums with information from MusicBrainz.org in order to get the information about the album. If MusicBrainz has the album cataloged as a box set, rather than individual albums, matching the album to MusicBrainz is always going to identify them as a box set.
Plex routinely re-checks the metadata of your libraries every few days by default. That may be why you see it reverting after a few days. You can stop Plex from doing this via this setting:
If unmatching the album does the trick, that should be it. I think Plex will remember that, and won’t automatically try to re-match it (@tom80H may know for sure if that’s true).
If this doesn’t work, then we may need the additional info that tom80h asked for.
