Separating subtitles for different version of the same movie when the versions are not sync frame to frame

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: 7.31.0.16605-beta

When I started to use Plex, I’ve created two main library, one for Movies and another for Tv Shows. Then, I’ve collected different shows and movies in the best quality possible. Sometimes, I could have 4K from DVD… sometimes just 720p (I use recording from Live TV)

Everything was working properly until I start to share with couple friends. Then, I’ve figured out that 4K is not good to share remotely.

My solution was splitting my collection in 4K Library and the rest for sharing. I’ve created 4 different folders, one for each library (4k_movies, movies, 4k_shows, shows). That worked nicely for sharing. But, for me, I lost the cool feature to have the best quality version available in one place. Now, I check the 4K library and if I don’t have it there, I need to check in the second library. I am using my TV, then the search is not smooth with remote control.

Then, I’ve decided to change the libraries again. Having All_Movies which will groups 4k_movies and movies folders, and Movies just with the movies folder. Something similar to Tv Shows.

For my use, I’ve disabled to add to the deck the Movies and Tv Shows libraries.

I was happy again, until I started to use subtitles. Sometimes, I have a Movie from live tv with low resolution for sharing with the own sync subtitles. And sometimes, I have the 4K version for me with the own sync subtitles.

Due to I am grouping folders with the same movie, Plex groups them, I like that. I could select the version that I want to play and it works for me flawless. But, when I want to select the subtitles, Plex shows me all the available subtitles. I doesn’t separate by version. Then, I always has to try one and it doesn’t work, try the next.

My question, is it any way to configure Plex to separate the subtitles for each version knowing that I have each version separate in different folders? I have a large collection now and I don’t have the time sync versions frame to frame.

Thank you in advance

Hi resuarez,
this is a very specific issue, even more interesting when your optimized versions are not synced anymore. I’d say you have two options:

  1. Rename a version so it’s separate.
  2. Create your versions by hand to be synchronized.

A third option would be to mux in the subtitles into their respective video files.

I was thinking about it. It is a long taks, but it seems there is not choice. Thank you for your advice.
