Server Tools - Who's watching what?

Trakt gives info on what someone has watched.  It means I would have to have each of my users make a Trakt account, then each would have to have access to the Trakt tool ON MY SERVER, and they would have to configure it to sync FROM MY SERVER.  Then they would have to make me a friend of some sort on Trakt in order for me to see what they watched OFF MY SERVER.  I already have the data ON MY SERVER of what, when and how they streamed MY CONTENT.  As of yet no one has anything working on synced content, so that's still in the air.

I don't think you fully understand how the Trakt plugin works once installed on PMS.  You can specify what user history (even remote ones) you're syncing to Trakt.  Now, while agree with you that it does not give you granular information specific to a particular user... it does show you, at the very least, what content is being watched on your PMS.  I have no filter set on my Trakt plugin settings so all user watch history is uploaded to Trakt.

No user accounts were created by any of my remote Plex users.  Hell, they probably don't even know what Trakt is.

Yes, I know that this was available, but in order for you to see their information don't you need access to the Trakt accounts for them?

With PlexWatch and the Web interface with it, I get that functionality now.  I don't get any information on the synced content.  (yet)  This whole thread though, is incorporating plexWatch information and more within the Plex Media Server's Web App.  Instead of having a third party download/add-on with only part of the information.

I was shocked, really, the lack of tools and controls that came with PMS when I first started messing with it.  Really, there were no controls. Sharing the individual libraries was all you could do.  Things have progressed much further now, but, we still need a lot more control of what, when and how people are streaming the media.

Mike clearly gets it.

What he is saying is that if you have 10 accounts on your server you need to be able to setup 10 TrakT accounts and have the PMS server correctly update each account to keep the watched status correct. If you have 40 accounts on your local PMS server then you need to setup 40 TrakT accounts, etc.

The present TrakT integration is really just setup to monitor one account more or less.

No, I have 1 Trakt account (mine) setup which is also a VIP account.  I chose to have all of my remote users watch history clumped with mine on the Trakt website.  Like I said, it doesn't show you who is watching what, but you can get a good idea of what is being watched with their flashy graphs and such.

I agree with you.  I would love to see the PMS have a slew of more "advanced" features.  Native solutions are usually born through 3rd party development if it catches on so let's keep the feedback coming!  :D

Most of the tools and reporting in the computing industry arose from hacks and exploits and the tools created to identify/fix them.  At least that's been my experience with all the different server platforms and software toolsets I've used...  There are identified issues within the Plex environment itself.   Had tools like these been developed already many of them could be dealt with before issues get out of hand..

As it is, if someone has been hacked we are reacting to it, not proactively preventing it.  Tools to tell us who, what, when and how our media is streaming can be extremely important to mitigate this type of problem.  Controls to prevent transcoding, syncing during high usage periods, high bandwidth, more than one stream from a user, these all get put into place after you have the knowledge the tools should give us.

3rd party apps only provide what the third party developer chooses to develop.  Or is capable of developing.  Vendor based solutions, since they have access to modify the base app code, can be much more flexible and over-all more powerful.  They might be as easy to use, but since the original developer can force certain event logging to take place, they have ultimate control on the tools and controls implemented on the platform.

Yeah, not an option, IMO...  One more thing to pay for when the functionality is missing from the app I already have.

+1

I want this too

Votes only count on the "Likes."  +1's and "me toos" are not counted.

Bumping this, so it can get some visibility on the new forums.

On a side not, I’m really liking the work drzoidberg33 is doing with PlexPy! This is a sweet set of tools, and he’s adding more to it as time goes on! So easy to set up, just need a working install of Python. completely platform independent and it just WORKS. All of the data that plexWatchWeb provides, without needing a dedicated web server running. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out his thread here: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/169591/plexpy-yet-another-web-front-end-for-plexwatch#latest

This is really starting to firm up into a great add-on app. Keep up the great work, Dr.

+1 any word on this happening?
