Set up VPN on router, but unable to set up pass-through for Plex to retain connection status outside

I have successfully set up PIA on my router (ASUS RT-AC66U with dd-wrt), but I run into the issue of not being able to get a direct connection outside of my home network.

There have been some other setup guides that explain custom configs, but they deal with running a local client on the computer, not setting up the config in the router. I tried playing around with the config setup, but either didn’t open the path for Plex, or broke the VPN.

Is there a guide to explain how to adjust settings on the router to allow for Plex connections?

I am having the same problem except I use LiquidVPN because Hulu and Netflix are accessible using this VPN service. However, I can’t figure out how to connect to Plex from the outside. Has anyone figured out a solution?

I ended up switching to NordVPN and it seemed to work fine. I think it all depends on the VPN provider as to how easy it is to work it out.

I’ve just received this response from NordVPN:

Please note that Plex servers are inaccessible with the VPN connection due to
requiring a certain open port. By default, Plex requires **port 32400** to be open
in order to access the server remotely.

At the moment, we are not able to provide any workaround method to access Plex
neither from the local nor from external networks due to incompatibility with port
forwarding.

Besides the OpenVPN solution (works well but can’t use NordVPN client for Windows) and the batch file solution (not working), I wonder if anyone has yet managed to find a solid workaround for NordVPN?
