Plex is working with my VPN, and I don't know why...

I’ve recently re-built my Plex server, moving from Win 7 to Win 10. I use PIA, and, in the past, I needed to run a bat file to add a route to allow remote access for Plex (the one that is referenced every time this question comes up). Before I got around to setting that bat file up on the new installation, I accidently tried remote access, and it is working fine.

I have tried all the “leak testing” sites I can find, and they all show that the VPN is doing its job.

I have the port forwarding set on my router, but as far as I know I have done nothing else.

The settings page says:
Fully accessible outside your network

The text below it shows:
Private 192.168.0.111 : 32400 <- Public : 32400 <- Internet

I use PIA, and I know they offer port forwarding, but I do not have that setup.

Normally I would just let this go as good luck, but I run the VPN for a reason, and I am worried that it is not working. Also, I travel a frequently, and I don’t want this to stop working at some point when I am away from home and unable to fix it.

I’m pretty far from an expert on networks and VPNs…any advice would be appreciated.

It’s luck. I use PIA too. Sometimes it’ll come up green, but most times it comes up red. Luck of the draw. When you go remote and if you want reliability - turn off the VPN.

PS: Everyone uses a VPN for a reason. Some reasons are a bit different.

Well I guess now is as good a time as any to say PIA has changed the game with their updated client.
You forward a port in the router. Manually connect that port in Plex’s Remote Access Area.
You give the PIA client the port and you get a green check mark instantly and permanently.

It’s idiot proof - 'cause I did it in 5 minutes.
