Having trouble with remote access once I turn my PIA VPN on

Server Version#: 1.25.3.5385
Player Version#: 4.72.0

Can someone please help me fix this? Once I turn on my PIA VPN I get " Not available outside your network" but when I turn off the VPN I get " Fully accessible outside your network". I’m sure there is a simple setting or fix for this. I’m just not savvy enough to know what to do. Thank you in advance.

PIA requires you to set up a port forward from the VPN into your Plex server. You’ll also need to configure the port in Plex. By default the port will change every time you connect. I am using PIA and Plex with Docker and have scripts to update the port.

PIA has a dedicated IP option that costs extra. You can check with support if it also gives you a consistent port forward. Even with this you’d need to re configure Plex when you turn the VPN off and on.

I haven’t checked but you may be able to configure PIA to bypass the VPN for the Plex port.

Sorry but either way it’s not going to be a simple checkbox solution.

This post describes the split tunnel feature. If you don’t want Plex running over PIA, then this should work.

Using Split tunneling with MacOS will only work up to MacOS 11, Big Sur. Monterey is not compatible with this feature unfortunately.

It works perfectly with MacOS 11 and all things Plex, nominated Browser (Non Default) as Exemptions. Use a bookmark as a way to open Plex Web and any Geo restricted websites in your location. With this method the Plex Chevron in the menu bar is irreverent, except for quitting Plex Server.

Note: Safari Browser does leak if using it as a Default Browser (VPN Traffic), so highly recommend using other browsers for general browsing.
