Setting Up New Server on Nvidia Shield

Hello, Apologize for general discussion topic but I am having a terrible time getting around on this board. Have ton of questions but will start with basic:

A year or so ago I managed to set up Plex Server on my PC and get it working but lately it has just “bugged me” too much that I get errors saying processor isn’t fast enough when playing recorded TV shows. It only gives me this on recorded tv shows (and has always had this problem) but never has this problem with movies that are on the server. Basically I rarely use Plex to watch recorded TV shows as performance is so bad and I have other alternatives.

  1. Any idea why tv shows have issues while movies do not?

  2. Would a Nvidia Shield definitely be better than a reasonably high quality PC at playing these tv shows?

  3. How do I set up a new Media Server on the Nvidia Shield? Currently, it looks to the PC server.

Thanks,

Jeff

I have a shield but a high quality PC is always going to better. I use both an old laptop and the Nvidia Shield as servers using a MyCloud NAS drive. I like the shield because it’s lower power and always on. What’s the specs of the PC you have now? Is it something you can upgrade a component to make it worth keeping as a Plex Server? Also look at your CPU Passmark score to see if it still meets your needs. If you Direct Play then you can have more concurrent streams than transcoded streams. For me the, Shield has met my needs for the amount of streams I have at the same time. The upload is also something to look at if you stream out of network often or have multiple users doing so. Another thing to to consider is what format your files are in and what resolution. I’ve heard the shield does not do well with h.265. All my media is h.264 which does fine.

Ran the Passmark score and got the following:

CPU Mark - 6,525.5 (54th percentile)
2D & 3 D - 583.4 and 19,57.9 (both in 54/54 percentile)
Memory Mark 2,167.4 (70th percentile)
Disk Mark 3,794.9 (79th percentile).
PassMark Rating 3,229.0 (70th percentile).

May not be the best PC in the world but it was high quality when I bought it a few years ago.

In terms of the types of files I can’t say. It would be whatever Plex defaults to. The problem only crops up when I play recordings from tv. When I play movies that I have converted to mp4s I don’t run into problems very often.

So does anyone think I should be having problems playing tv recordings with these benchmarks?

I was thinking I would set my Nvidia Shield Pro up as a server for TV recordings instead in the hope it would improve performance but I can’t even begin to figure out how to do that.

Thanks,

Jeff

Had to uninstall updates before I could set up the Nvidia Shield Plex server. Why that would work I have no idea. At least I got that done.

Hopefully it will improve playback performance.
